Hello i need help please i want a transfer to warrington or bolton mail centre, long story cut short im a opg of 14 years, we sold our house in london 5 years ago and wife and daughter moved back home to be near her family in wigan and i applied for a transfer have been commuting for the last 5 years every weekend from london to wigan and back, am tired of waiting and the travel is getting me down not to mention the cost, its affecting my marriage as we have grown apart, also have a disabled daughter who gets very upset every time i go i dont know what else to do im at my wits end please can anyone help me all advice will be welcome

You might have more luck if you transferred to a delivery office there's loads of them in this area.

Transfers from DOs to MCs are very unlikely to happen. Head round to your local DO where you live and have a chat with the DOM there, you might be able to sort out something

I am truly sorry to hear of your circumstances. The North West of England consists of three mail centres, namely, Manchester, Preston and Warrington. To the best of my understanding, Bolton closed a few years ago, but I stand corrected on that. I am told there is in the pipeline a new Parcelforce facility to be opened in Chorley, which is fairly local to Wigan, but when that is up and running, I simply do not know. It would do you no harm making enquiries into that respect with your union rep and finding out what sort of recruitment policy will be in place.

Five years is far too long commuting back and forth from London and obviously it has placed a strain on your marriage and family life. Unfortunately, transferring to another mail centre in the present climate is harder than breaking into Fort Knox. We are in the eyes of the management "surplus" in all but name, and I dare say, Manchester, Preston and Warrington are in the business of letting staff go on VR terms and going down the road of casual labour, as is the case everywhere.

In an ideal world, you would be able to transfer into another mail centre, but I suggest you may have to take something against your wishes initially, until something better comes along. Maybe the option, already suggested by another poster, of transferring into a delivery office might be your only alternative. If that can be achieved in the Wigan area, the positive is being with your family everyday which is what I would like to see achieved. Fourteen years as an OPG is a good innings, but it needs to continue in the North West of England. I hope it works out for you.
