New driver coach

Post by heathrow86 »

We have just had a new network driver coach appointed at our office. This was done under the new coaching agreement for professional drivers. At the moment as we are a small voc, the key room is covered at weekends usually on O/T and sometimes in the week by drivers, who volunteer for it. Our new driver coach is saying he is first in line for said key room duties, as he is now classed as admin. Needless to say this has caused a few disputes amongst the drivers. Is our coach right? I cannot find it anywhere in the agreement. Also to top that the coach is also a CWU rep, which is also causing a bit of stress, as some drivers believe that it is a conflict of interest being a rep and a coach, as the agreement says

"Where Drivers Coaches identify a serious driving issue this will be highlighted to the driver at the time and advice and mentoring offered in real time to remedy the issue.

 At the conclusion of the coaching session, where the Coach believes that the driving problem remains, the reasons will be fully discussed with the driver and entered by the Coach on the TNA form, this should include a recommendation for remedial action designed to restore performance. The driver will have the opportunity to record their comments on both the Coaches view and the proposed remedy.

 A meeting will be arranged with the Line Manager, Driver Coach and the driver. At this meeting the driver may be accompanied by their union rep or a work colleague from within Royal Mail Group. The purpose of the meeting will be to agree a development action plan, which may include further Training initiatives carried out by the Driver Coach or the engagement of external training resources. The views of all parties will be fully considered in the formulation and agreement of the action plan".

Are the drivers right?

In my understanding O/T is available to any suitably trained and competent company employee on a fair and locally agreed standard. You are at liberty to question active discrimination if you feel this is being breached.

The point of a Union rep holding the coaching role should not necessarily conflict with the duty role, any driver can request either the area rep or branch secretary to attend in any meeting deemed to conflict with interests. If the majority of drivers, staff, feel their union rep is not providing a suitable service to the members who elected him/her for the role, they can petition a vote of "No Confidence" and lodge it with the local branch secretary.

The drivers coach rule does not include any privileges above any other staff, and I believe your line manager or area Union rep should be contacted to resolve the issue.
