advice on gypsy site

hi has anyone got any advice on delivery to a gyspy site. i deliver to a rural gyspy site where they have metal/wooden boxes at each pitch i drive up to each box and reach out through van window and put letters in each box because i dont want to get out of van because of dogs. kids follow me and take mail out of their neighbours boxes .also the local farms now collect their post because there addresses have been used for fraud(mail taken out of there boxes) police are investigating. its to risky getting out of the van with threat of theft. kids follow me shouting abuse only today a young lad blocked my way and shouted abuse at me.what ineed to know is can i refuse to deliver to this site.

Of course you can refuse to deliver, inform your DOM in the morning and let him know.


ps. you are not allowed to deliver out of the window, you must get out of the van to make a delivery.

Yep,my place has done it before,'some' of the residents got pissed of with having to collect their mail and they had a meeting and things calmed down.

Is there not a warden on the site? I use to end up deliverying most of the mail there at the office, as the travellers kept moving pitches, and many had the same surname, so it was difficult to keep track.
The amount of parking fines that went there was staggering!

no there isnt a warden it is an illegal site the farmer sold the land to the gypsies with out planning permission.they give the neighbours farm addresss for any fines/court appearances when they have something to sign for they claim they cant read or write and sign with a cross.

Not if it is an illegal site - the mail should be held at the callers and ID produced each and every time they pick up the mail.

well i was told we deliver to addresses not people so all of the mail would be going to the farm and let the farmer deal with it, especially if he sold them the land!

Maybe on the frame, but are their addresses registered with Royal Mail's Address Management Unit at Admiral House, Admiral Way, Doxford International Business Park, SUNDERLAND, SR3 3XW addressdevelopment@royalmail.com ? If not don't go there.

But the District Council have little idea what properties are on their patch, their circulars addressed to a few non existant addresses and not sent to a few real houses not that I'm sure the Royal Mail's Address Development Unit is any more accurate.

Royal Mail enters all new properties, name changes and amendments on their "Not yet built" file. This data is not added to the Postcode Address File on their web site until the postcode is activated. A postcode can be activated when the property is complete and ready for mail delivery. Royal Mail requires confirmation that the properties are completed/occupied before additions are made to the Postal Address File. This can cause problems for utility connections which are required prior to completion and occupation. Royal Mail will not add an address to the Postcode Address File unless it receives postal deliveries.
It is the applicants/developers responsibility to notify Royal Mail to activate the postcodes. As the development proceeds contact the Address Development Centre at Sunderland on 08456 04 50 60 (Option 3) or fax 08456 05 44 33 to activate the postcodes for connection of services or on completion/occupation of each plot.

When we moved into our present house we were told what the address and postcode were, about 3 or 4 months later we got a BT bill with a completely different address and postcode on it. Some people had been in their houses for a couple of years when this change happened!!
