Compassionate leave help please?

Post by Puddleman »

Hello. Had a family death(Grandad) Saturday 29th April. Had the call from the hospital to make my way to the hospital as he is not in a good way, after a talk with my dad I decided to go to work and see it out while my dad went to the hospital.

After arriving at work I decided I couldn't hack it so spoke with the Dom explained the situation and decided to come home and go with my dad to attend the hospital, at this time it was to late my grandad had passed away half way along our travels. A couple of questions I have is Will I get compassionate leave pay for the Saturday? And also the week commencing I have it booked as annual leave, could I possibly claim that leave back as I would be entitled to compassionate leave? If you could help me on this it would be great.

Special leave guidance

If arranging a funeral up to one week with pay, which includes the bereavement, arranging the funeral and any other duties (This is for arranging funerals of next of kin or as an executor).
For the death of next of kin and blood relative, (spouse, civil partner, long standing unmarried relationship, child, parent, sibling) up to one week with pay (No additional week is allowed if the person is arranging the funeral).
For a more distant relative e.g. parent in law, grandparent, aunt, uncle- one day with pay.
Discretion for additional time off in exceptional circumstances where care of a dependant is involved, however where prolonged time off is required this might be without pay or from holiday entitlement.

Sorry to hear about your grandad mate but it's only one day with pay so you won't be getting your annual leave back.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

It's not specifically mentioned and it would be up to the manager's discretion but if we're talking about your wife's brother then it should be yes.

I'd suggest that a brother in law as a blood relative of your spouse is considered to be of equal 'closeness' as parent in law and therefore qualifies as a single day off.
