Royal Mail Group – New Approach to Supporting Charities



Earlier this year the Royal Mail Group advised the Union that it was adopting a fresh approach to strengthen its support and profile for working with charities.



As part of this, the company explained that they wanted to involve the Union on a panel of people who would research and short list a number of charities, whittle these down to three specific charities and then put these to a vote of employees to decide the main charity that Royal Mail would support.



Given the strong traditions within the Union and our membership for supporting charity work, we took up the offer and directly engaged on the panel the assistance of Ted Stead Branch Secretary and Carl Webb Regional Secretary, two of the leaders of our own charity CWU Humanitarian Aid. The outcome of this was that the joint panel agreed to nominate the following three charities to be put to a vote of employees:



Alzheimer’s Society.

Whizz-Kidz.

Prostate Cancer.



The company are providing information to employees about these charities as part of a Special Edition of The Courier. The intention is to give employees the opportunity to cast a vote for their preferred charity as part of the forthcoming IPSOS MORI Survey.



As part of the overall discussions that have taken place, we have also been able to get Royal Mail to strengthen their support for CWU Humanitarian Aid. We are pleased to report that the company has committed to a new five year agreement that will ensure CWU Humanitarian Aid is provided with excellent facilities and equipment from the company enabling our own charity to go from strength to strength.



On behalf of the Union and CWU Humanitarian Aid, we believe these are positive developments and would encourage CWU members to participate both in nominating their preferred charity and supporting various events to help raise money for the final nominated charity. The company will also be providing the nominated charity with matching financial support up to £1 million.
