Royal Mail Forum – Birmingham NEC – 26th and 27th March 2012


The Union recently received a letter from Mark Higson Royal Mail Letters Operational Director, inviting a very significant part of the CWU representative structure to a Royal Mail Forum in Birmingham on the 26th and 27th March 2012.

The Forum is a Royal Mail Letters Operational event and includes over 4,000 managers attending, split over the two days. This invitation initiated some further discussions with Royal Mail and we can confirm that as a result it has now been agreed that the CWU can hold regional forums for local representatives over the next few months. Furthermore, subject to a review of these regional forums, there will be an opportunity to firm up these arrangements on an ongoing and regular basis.

The Postal Executive has discussed both these initiatives and has welcomed them as a significant development in the relationship between our organisations.

We understand that the Forum will involve information on the current state of play with Business Transformation and a series of presentations on what Royal Mail view as best practice. The Union has been given the opportunity to contribute at the event and will set out our views on the key issues relating to Business Transformation and the future of the company.

The invitation has been accepted on the clear understanding between the parties that it does not mean that the Union will necessarily agree with the content of the Royal Mail presentations. The company also understand that whilst continuing to support the need for the successful deployment of Business Transformation, we will also be raising some challenging issues for the managers present.


In accepting the invitation to the Royal Mail Forum we believe it is important that the Union takes up the full allocation of places. Any representative who cannot attend should arrange for a suitable substitute.


With regard to the subsequent local reps Forums, these will be structured in a way that can help support local representatives deal with deployment of transformation and discuss the wider challenges facing the Union and the company. It will take a while to organise our local representatives Forums and further information will be sent out on dates and venues etc in due course. However, it is unlikely that these will commence before April 2012.

We understand that Royal Mail will now send out a personal invite in the next few days to the following representatives:-

- CWU Postal Executive Members
- CWU Divisional Representatives
- CWU Area Representatives in all functions
- CWU Area Health & Safety Representatives
- RML – CWU Engineering Reps
- RML - CWU Admin Reps

The invitation will also include the agenda for the day and explain that the company will meet the cost of travel expenses for our representatives. We are currently clarifying the position regarding CWU Branch Secretaries being in attendance.

There are bound to be some logistical issues associated with this event and we would ask that if Branches have particular enquiries these should await the invitation from Royal Mail and be directed to Lionel Sampson in the DGS (P) Department.

It would appear they have invited the most knowledgeable members. It looks more like a Royal Mail roadshow this time, there is no Plan B, this is the only way forward, we must speed up BT2010, there's no more money, our managers are worth their weight, it is good to be sharing our views with this new understanding, we can only do this with the cooperation of the CWU with full involvement ..................feck me there's no need for the shindig in Brum it's all there.

Oh yes! Was it not the forum to end all forums or at least 'til the next time. It'll be another a*se licking convention as usual. I believe dingo said on the last occasion in November we complained about the conditions and complained when Dave Ward highlighted the facts to Mark Higson......who obviously took no notice because lo and behold here we are again................happy as can be all good friends and jolly good company.

What's that TV advert again................"It's good to talk"...well it can certainly be lucrative even if it achieves nothing at all.
