How do you get it through their thick heads?

Post by obscurityknocks »

Going to be pushed right into the thick of our park and loop revision when i start rep job. Office is full of apathy due to 2 out of the last 3 reps going into management. We have plenty that come in early, throw d2d's in from in their own time, dont take breaks etc etc. Probably only 70% of office are in union. How does a new rep get people to realise that doing the job properly is in everyones interest for the future.

1. You set a good example. You do the job properly. You try and get a few others to do the same. You try to create a culture in the office where everyone does the job properly.
2. You have to try and get management onside. They go on about Individual Performance Standards. Someone starting early is obviously not working to the correct standards. Anyone else being tested or whatever is not being treated fairly and that is what Individual Grievances are for and disagreements.
3. Buy a baseball bat.
4. Don't expect it to happen overnight.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

If people come in early, they are working without pay, if there were a fire would they have protection as they are not offically there. then if they finish on their time management think the duty is ok, or they can cut hours, that is not what we want, but plays into RM hands, come on guys dont go in early! :no no

but theres your point
no doubt under the last 2 reps, any staff working their hours etc got no support
so now after all that someone starts telling them to do X,Y & Z
In all my time at RM we have never had a decent rep
If I was staying in RM I would have went for it,however when I can Im out of here
plus ironically, you need a decent relationship with managers

Its been a year since I took on the sub rep role at my office. I have no problem talking to the members what I do have problem is talking to reps in other sections who are based in my office. Its like an 'old boys' club and they seem only to be interested in themselves. I was thinking of resigning my position but then thought this attitude needs to be changed from within. Whether I have the will power to deal with it is another matter.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

when he got back saturday he got his ear chewed off.claiming he hadnot signed anything yet.etc etc.

can he do this?whats the point of weekly resource meetings?

but ,and this is where it fits this thread..

to prove it can be done on saturday he prepped his d2d's for monday then came in early today and chucked in his first sequanced mail trays

THEY WILL NOT LISTEN!!!!
Not only does the petty minded selfishness push the expected workload to the extreme, but you wait till you come across someone who only wants to work properly and knock off on time. That's when the problems start, namely the comparing one person, i.e The sensible One, to another person, i.e The Prat that runs round. That's when the fun starts, and the tears, the arguments, the stresses, the grievances.

Why haven't you stood for the position ? Perhaps you shouldn't criticise others if you haven't got the bottle to do the job .

It's not always about bottle eb.
Lots of members would make great reps but it's a time consuming, relationship destroying pain in the arse job if you're going to do it right and if you can't put 100% into it...it isn't worth doing.
That's a lot to ask of members who might have other commitments outside the job but it doesn't mean they should have to put up with piss poor representation....or that they can't criticise.
Some reps are given too much protection because they "do it off their own back".
If they aren't doing anything they aren't doing anything off their own back.

If colleagues are unable or unwilling to stand for election they should never spend half their time bitching about the rep . I like many other reps on here had a bad enough job as it was ( without or wanting any reward) putting up with Management without being backstabbed by staff who most of them would have had rings rung around them by Management within weeks.

You cannot please everybody all of the time . Most of the Reps problems are caused totally by colleagues who through bloody mindedness simply cannot do the job correctly .

Then have the utmost cheek to blame the rep when savings need to be made.

That's not always the scenario eb...that's your experience.
Others have had completely different experiences and are as entitled to bitch about those bad experiences as you are to bitch about yours.
There should be no more hiding places for bad reps than there is for bad members.
One bad rep can make a bad office, one bad member can't.
