part timers being stitched.

a part time colleague asked me to post on here for him/them, as he feels they are being misrepresented by the rep, and stitched by management.( i was told to keep out of it as it has nothing to do with full timers). anyways, here goes,,, they had them at a meeting this morning, to tell them that they want to put them back on 5 day weeks. this involves all p/t staff from 24hrs up to 30hrs. they are all on either 9 day fortnights or 3 on 1 off. the reason being is that rm dont like the 9 day fortnites or 3 on 1 off shift patterns, they struggle with the resoursing and coverage or so they say. they have been told they will each get a vote to see what they want. the carrott??,,,well,... 24 hr staff will get 27 hrs a week, 25hr staff will get 28.5 hrs a week, and 30 hr staff will get 31.5. and they will all be on a permanent duty. my mate is 30 hrs and wants to stay on 9 day fortnites, he says he doesnt want to work an extra day each week for the sake of 1.5 hrs more. the problem is, most of the part timers are either 24 or 25 hrs. they outnumber the 30 hr staff. and some have said they will vote to accept as they will get more hrs. my mate said they are breaking the national agreement of 1 in 4 saturdays off if he is forced back onto 5 day weeks. rep has said 1 in 4 sats is NOT agreement, its an OPTION. If this is the case, then surely if it is voted in favour, anyone NOT wanting to go back to 5 day weeks, has, by right, an option (as in the agreement) to be catered for a 1 in 4 sats off.....this was pointed out to managent, who said ''they,ll cross that bridge when they come to it.''...in other words, you,ll have to like it or lump it.....any comments??

I can see both sides of this and appreciate why the lower contract PT would jump at the chance to get more contracted pay which means more guaranteed money when working or off with either holiday or sick pay if the worst happens.

From what I believe, there is no reason why your mate could not keep their 9 day fortnight while others get their 5 day week back, "everyone's a winner baby, that's the truth" as Hot Chocolate sang! The sticking point which I don't know the answer to... If each group cannot be duty holders, who are the rightful duty holder staff and who should be "floaters/reserves"? Duty holders should in theory be less stressful (unless managers start bullying because they want the duties to be doable inside the shift pattern of the holder without cut-offs or extended delivery), but ultimately if we all do the job as per RM/CWU agreed spec, we all simply have so many contract hours to fill sorting/delivering mail. Anything above that is optional...
