Hiya guys,

just want to know how we get replacement ballot papers that have not arrived in the post for members

our office is having an election and it is postal ,however some have still not recieved ballot papers.it is only a small unit (about 16)and every vote counts.

we are told it is an independant company dealing with it.

ive never heard of replacement ballot papers you could be voting twice

The ballot papers usually will be numbered and have bar codes,so its would not be rocket science to find out if somebody has voted twice out of 16 people..IMO

It will not be an Independent Company for sure . It will be the local branch with the branch organiser conducting the ballot . The count should be performed by 2 lay members of the branch . Postal ballots are not perfect , but an Office of 16 should have easily been performed .

surely a ballot should be anonomous and surely having a barcode on is illegal as it can be matched up to who was sent that ballot paper

Using a bar code on a ballot paper is not illegal in fact Westminster council do it for their elections http://www.drs.co.uk/wesminster-elections.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

How accurate is it?

The scanners and specially designed ballot papers ensure accurate data capture that eliminates human error. A unique barcode on the reverse of each ballot paper ensures it cannot be counted twice, and a small barcode on the form identifies which contest each ballot is for. The scanner uses these barcodes to ensure a genuine ballot is being scanned and checks that the image has been accurately captured and correctly reoriented. The scanners will only record a clear vote, all other decisions are taken by the Returning Officer.

However, using a bar code to identify a voter is certainly illegal as far as I know. I guess it depends on what information is stored in the Bar Code.
