We have a vacant FT walking duty. It has now been advertised as a vacant duty.
We have a FT PD duty driver, with a fair amount of seniority, wanting the vacant walking duty. DOM is humming and hawing, not giving us a straight answer.
Can the driver have the duty? If the manager says "No-one else wants your driving duty, I can't replace you", what can we do about it?

If there are no drivers to cover then you're fecked.Same kind of thing happened at my place.
He could recruit another driver and your guy would have to wait for the new guy to get in and be trained.
Problem is they don't like recruiting,especially a full time duty.

REASONABLE TIME COMES INTO PLAY
SIGN FOR THE DUTY, THEN GIVE IT SAY 4 WEEKS

You guys are lucky, we do not have any full time walk in our office. We used to have but they were all reduced to 25 hour duties, now the indoor elements are all absorbed. The only full time duties we now have are rurals. This was done without any agreement may I add but I suppose thats par for the course these days.

Thanks for the advice. The duty was never displayed, but the new DOM did at least inform us there was a vacancy, which is more than can be said for previous DOMs.
I'll say to DOM tomorrow that I am of the opinion that the driver can sign for the duty, and give DOM reasonable time of four weeks to find a replacement, before driver switches to walking.
I do know that there hasn't been a FT contract dished out up here for 4.5 years. That does complicate matters. None of our FT want to drive.
