Hi I was hoping that someone with a little knowledge in union matters or Royal Mails procedures could help me. A long serving postie had booked a couple of days off for a special treat for his wifes birthday putting it in the diary and had agreed it with the manager, he is taking her away to another country tickets booked etc.
Manager is off this week and the ADOM is refusing to let the postie have the time off saying he is short staffed - nothing to do with RM having arranged training on one of these days, and him giving another postie who is off on the sick this week off as annual leave. He says the manager should not of agreed this.

Where does this guy stand ?

Is there a minimum guide for refusing time off ?

Who has more authority the DOM off on leave or the ADOM running the office ?

Can leave be cancelled like this ?

Anyone got any good advice apart from go sick it would be greatly appriciated THANKS

I wouldn't advise going sick as there is another thread about someone being conducted for going sick when not getting the leave days they requested.
Is the agreement to have the time off in writing?
Was there a witness to the days off being approved?
If so the ADOM can whistle.
Your colleague needs to make it clear that he isn't going to be at work on those days because he has made alternative arrangements.
Get on to your Area rep and get him to put some pressure on the ADOM.

The best thing to do is when booking leave ask for a print out so you have it in writing.

I suggest he takes his pre-booked and agreed leave and if the ADOM has an issue with it he can take it up with the DOM.

Annual leave cannot be arranged as an alternative to sick leave...the ADOM is dicing with his P45.

Your employer can refuse permission for your holiday as long as they give you notice which is at least as long as the holiday requested

I don't know how long your colleague is going away for or when - but you might be able to play the LAW card

I am guessing if its 2 days from Thursday don't use this as 2 days is Tue/Wed, or 3 days from Friday for the same reason - Any other combination it should work.

Ok,what's an ADOM,first i've seen that on here.

At my place when we get an odd day off the manager is usually in front of the computer as he has to check it's available,then we get a print off of our holiday sheet.

cant get single days of in our place even though everyone all have weeks owing to them

I appreciate that there has to be a limit off any one day/week,BUT,if the day or week you want is not full,then there should be no problem (in the real world) getting that time off.
Too many managers are taking the piss,and too many of our colleagues are not on the ball.Dare i mention reps?
