What is the ruling on going over your time. In our office if you approach your line-manager before you go out on delivery, and tell him you are likely to go over your finishing
time, there standard reply is, you finish early on Saturday so it evens itself out. Is there a rule we can work to which will stop this. You feel like you are being intimidated.
I have spoken to my union rep who is very non-committal with his response.

Then your manager can't bank your hours using a non-existent agreement.

i thought it was only 30 min that they could carry over in that week. of course you could say to him you wont do the ot and your cutting off.that will make him sweat so he will then pay you the ot rather then do the work his self

The 30 minute "flex" is optional it isn't compulsory.
The 30 minute "flex" can be requested if there are unforeseen circumstances and the 30 minutes should be paid back that same week.
It doesn't say if you finish early one day you owe that time back later in the week. That is rubbish.

He's talking about banking hrs,there is no such agreement.Your rep 'should' know this.
Tell your manager you will come back to the office on early days to work to your time,tell him to make sure he's there as well to confirm it.
If he says which he will that there is no work to do in the office tell him that's his problem.
Plus get rid of your rep.

in fairness I see people that finish 1 hour early mon tues, go over an hour on wed, work to time or perhaps a little over thur and fri then they finish at 12 on a sat ( our finish time is 14.40)

they try and book an hour for weds and a bit for thurs fri

now I am all for people getting paid overtime when it is due

but it has always been the way that it's swings and roundabouts make some and lose some

if it evens out over the week I don't book

I apologise if this is not the case you mean

but people have to be aware that if you make time some days you really can't moan if they don't wanna pay you o/t other days

I understand where you are coming from Fedup, but you make yourself available for work each day to your contracted hours. If you finish your round early on any given day, Royal Mail can justifiably make you do other work up to your contracted hours, as long as you are capable of doing that work and have had the training to do it. If they choose not to enforce this, then it is not justifiable for them to roll over that time and insist that you work beyond your normal finish time on another day. They cannot by law force you to work beyond your normal finishing time. However if there is a local agreement to change start and finish times on particular days to cope with different traffic volumes, this is where long and shorts come in, and they should be implemented using the Industrial Relations Procedures and whereby there is an agreement to what the start and finish times are. As the National Agreement states. Nobody should be in a situation where they do not know from day to day when they start, and when they finish.

call me funny but I only want to work my hours every week

if I go under some days and over other days I even it out I have worked my hours

I don't expect to finish early some days and be paid for overtime others

I work my hours and get paid for them

Every single working day is taken on its own merits, it is not the posties' problem if managers let you walk out the door early on a Monday or Tuesday but then the mail volume is unachievable inside contract hours on the Wednesday.

Personally, I do well to finish ~10 minutes early something like a couple of times a month and have frustrations from the other side of the coin... I see colleagues on their way home almost on a daily basis while I am delivering, because the managers are not asking them to do other work until their official finish time. Our depot is never completely on top of everything, at the very least there is always D2D that can be thrown in, or ASAP atc.

The problem with Longs and Shorts is where does it end. With later start times and the autumn pressure leading up to xmas pressure, who really starting at 9am wants to finish work in the dark at 6pm (assuming full time 8 hour contract, and just 1 hour added on to the Longs) This may suit some people but not all, and as the previous writer has said, it is for Royal Mail to fill your working day. You have made yourself available for those hours under the terms of your contract.

We do them - I like them - we don't lapse now even on quiet days there is not enough capacity.
