Lost PDA ...... not reported.

A guy in an office I call at put a special through a customer's door without getting a signature. It was one of those queer looking ones you get from say Hong Kong and because he had about two dozen signed-fors he says this one slipped through. The manager just about bought the story.

Anyway, just weeks later he went and lost his PDA. He went back to the office so had a chance to report the loss, but didn't. He was off the next day and the covering postman found the device and reported the find to the line manager, not realising he was dropping the regular lad right in it.

The 'loser' has his fact finding interview next week. He's a quiet, inoffensive fella but clearly one who makes the odd mistake. How serious is this? We all drop blobs, is the not reporting the loss that serious or can he claim he intended to try and find the gizmo ASAP?

The company has some people terrified to make mistakes and then gives them grief when they don't know how to resolve an honest c*ck-up.

could say he didnt know he had lost it, say he could,nt remember if he.d put it back. i went back one day, and put the pda on my fitting, while i did my kill offs, i was on for 20mins doing them, then i put me coat on and left, forgetting all about it. make up a similar pork pie.

well my first thought is when was he trained on using PDAs and what part of that covered what to do in case of loss..........

Hmm, everyone I've talked to says they definitely would have reported it lost. He's turned an accidental act, losing it, into a deliberate act, not reporting it. He must be kicking himself now it's turned up. I'd report it missing and if the worst came to the worst they could stop payment for the bl**dy thing out of my wages. They surely can't be worth that much the numbers Royal Mail buy them in. The problem is the DOM at this particular office claims to be grossly overstaffed (which one doesn't). He'll definitely be considering sacking him, whether he goes through with it is another matter.

Another problem with being devious in this instance is that it now casts doubt on his story about the Reg. That might have been an accident. The DOM might be suspicious it wasn't.

At cost price they tend to start at £1,050. The better versions go up to about £1,400 / £1,500. Not sure of the spec' of RM's and clearly when you're buying 100,000 you are going to get a humongous discount. Nevertheless if you do lose one Tamsin, don't be too quick to volunteer to reimburse via your wages. Sadly their value makes them a "DO NOT MISLAY" item. It definitely makes them a "REPORTABLE MISSING IN ACTION" item as soon as you possibly can.

Which unfortunately puts the hapless guy in this thread in a bad position. And he hasn't give his union rep' a fair chance.
