Part timer's days off

Post by MrPPatt »

We are a little late with the revision at my office. :Very Happy

I've just seen the proposed shifts etc on the notice board. I will be transferred from 5 days @ 4 hours per day to 3 days @ 7 hours per day. Fair enough. :cuppa

So I look at the shift allocation for the new 3-day part timers to see my days off. It should be simple maths - we are working 3 days out of 6 - so we should be getting half our Saturdays off (one in two). Could not believe when it showed me getting one Sat in four.

How can this be fair?

One in four Saturdays off was the agreement made in BT2010 following a "park and loop" revision, as a result the last nationwide strikes, I believe. So in that sense, your DOM has delivered what was promised through the national talks between RM and the CWU.

What duty rotation plan have you been given?
Any talk yet about how PTers in your depot may be offered overtime by coming in on one of your scheduled days off, to cover the likely unachieveable workloads?

Yeah but one-in-four Saturdays off, is for full time, who work 5 days out of 6.

So if I only worked one day a week, it would be reasonable that 3 out of 4 of them were Saturdays??? :no no

I haven't been given a duty rotation plan yet, but whichever of the 2 groups I am in (displayed on the chart on our notice board)- I will get the same number of Saturdays off (i.e. one-in-four).

If you have got 1 in 4 be grateful.
A lot of offices are still on 1 in 6, and in other offices the p/t staff have been offered a 3 day week - Thurs, Fri and Sat.

! in 4 good.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

You will most likely work 3 days from 4 thur-mon.
Every 4 weeks you will have sat, mon, tue, wed off.
That's not a bad result coming from the position of a five day week with a rotating day off.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Nice in theory but would not work in practice. To get the 1 in 4 for everyone they probably need to task 3/4 of the whole unit to work on Saturdays. If they didn't then they would need to plan a 5 in 6 single day rotation and you would be back at square one.

In essence from your single viewpoint yes it may seem unfair, but looking at it as a unit if you are getting more Saturdays off than now, the drawback which is what your naturally focused on is that as a ratio of days worked you will be working more Saturdays than probably any other. Still you are more likely to get a long weekend than the 39 hour guys.

Hi

Can anyone offer me some advice. I have not had a saturday off since January this year unless its been annual leave. I have asked if I can have 1 have seeing as i thought we are meant to get 1 in 4 and my manager says that because I am a reserve I am not entitled to any. Can anyone provide me with written confirmation that I am entitled to equal rights along with other members of staff.
I called HR and they spouted the usual "reserves are there to cover everyone else" and "managers discretion".
Isn't 1 in 7 months a bit unfair?

Unfortunately, you will find out, as I have, rm and the cwu don't give a s**t about part time workers. Waiting nearly 10 months for a reply regarding a query for part time staff.

If you cover Bobs duty next week then you should get Bobs day off,if Bobs day off is Sat then you should get that,(not the proverbial Tuesday  )too many reps are being lazy in this department.
And management are taking the piss out of reserves, but the sad thing is 'some' reps and colleagues who are on fixed duties with rolling days off don't give a f**k.

There is nothing 'set in stone' it's all about fairness and not discriminating against reserves.

Ignore HR,they don't know their arse from their elbow.

Also is your office in the 1 in 4,as if they are not then the 2010 1 in 4 does not kick in until you have had a revision.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
