In your defence, the manager should have phoned you at home first, rather than turn up on your doorstep. From his or her perspective, they take orders from above and from my own experiences DSM's are not mild mannered in their approach. Sick absence is always flavour of the month with the bosses and if as you say, it is too high in your area, believe me, they will not turn a blind eye to it.
