Annual Leave

Due to operational needs the management have not added any more annual leave spaces for the summer mainly because we have been cut to the bone after the last MGV revision (April 2011). I work nights and when I asked for a night off I was told I could only have it as Special Leave C (Unpaid) even thru I had 11 days left on my annual leave. Basically to get paid I would have to make the hours up as one bloke had to when he took a night off because his daughter went into labour and he never got much sleep after he had to take her in and stay waiting for his grandchild to be born. Is this now Royal Mail policy or is our local making up their own rules as they go along? I always thought if you had a domestic issue you could use a day off your annual leave if you had any left. I actually needed the night off because I had to take my son to the hospital and my ex wife couldn't
