KYE DUDD Bristol & District Candidate for the Postal Executive Committee 2011 - Vote For Change X


The leadership of the CWU Postal side has promised much but delivered little. Many have grown stale and need change to bring fresh energy and drive. The policies that I promise to work for are below

BASIC PAY
We were promised five years ago it would be a priority to get basic pay up to the national average. Since that promise the gap between our pay and the national average has become larger.

MAIL CENTRE CLOSURES
Despite promises from the leadership to save Mail Centres, Royal Mail has been allowed to get away with implementing their plans in full resulting in huge job losses.

PENSIONS
The leadership has accepted the abolition of the final salary scheme without a fight. Other Unions are prepared to defend their pensions through strike action but ours was given away without a whimper.

SATURDAYS
The leadership keep opposing a change to a Monday-Friday service due to supposed job losses. The reality is they are accepting huge job losses anyway and we are getting nothing in return. It’s time to listen to CWU members and stop telling them what’s good for them.

DOOR - DOOR
I will oppose the leadership in their drive to embrace a “winners and losers” culture as in the door to door agreement

COLLEAGUE SHARE
I would not accept the removal of benefits like colleague share.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL PAY
It cannot be right that the Executive want more pay than those they represent. This money should go to aid support for front line Reps in the workplace. I will oppose any move to pay the Executive an inflated wage.

INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH
The Union will become weaker through placing National CWU officials on management boards. The leadership needs to stop trying to be managers and get back to leading a trade union on behalf of workers.

It would be nice to get better wages, but what about the important issues?
B&H, Posties being pressured to cut corners on H&S, the handling of the "rationalisation" programme, etc., etc., etc.?

I'm sorry, but you'll need to come up with a better campaign than that, to get my vote.

You got my vote also - new blood is needed and you have talked about rationalisations (thought it meant closures myself) in your address saying RM have been allowed to implement their plans in full. I heard you speak at the recent gate meetings outside the Mail Centre about how important it was to support workers in London facing compulsory redundancies. Thats what we need - people who are prepared to tackle issues head on and meet CWU members face to face. I hope you and the other lad from Plymouth get elected.

It was absolutely the right thing to do standing up with London over the Mail Centre closures and opposing compulsory redundancies, It's a shame we couldn't manage to keep any of them open.

Thanks for filling in the details. It's good to read that there are still some who're determined to do something about the closures, and the treatment of those who're affected. I think it's also great that you say you'll fight the "winners and loosers" culture. And above all else, your intention to listen to the Members, rather than trying to tell us what's good for us.

I do however have one concern (which I've also asked Tony Bouch about): which is the current culture of "secrecy clauses" when negotiating National Agreements. Where do you stand on that?
Are you in favour of "secrecy clauses" or against?
If (as I am) you're against the use of these clauses, then are you intending to fight against them. And if so, how do you intend to go about it?
Personally, I see "secrecy clauses" as a major threat to CWU strength and unity. Because it's leaving a lot of people feeling let down, by those involved in the process. Because we're kept in the dark for so long (even when on Strike), and then given insufficient time to consider the agreement before voting.

I don't think people should be going weeks (even a week) without information from negotiations especially national talks that effect thousands of members. This results in Union members losing faith and disputes losing momentum. There will always be times when negotiations are at a critical point but I cannot see why this should be for more than a day at most. In my branch we make sure as soon as we have any information during disputes gate meetings are called to provide updates. If I get elected I will visit as many branches as possible and ask for meetings in the workplace (or on the gate) to give the latest news

I agree with most of what your saying Kye,what are your thoughts on the current revisions that have and are being
implemented up and down the country,I could list endless questions on BT2010 but the way these revisions are
being implemented and in some cases shoe-horned in with CWU help is alienating members.Reps are also getting
the runaround trying to deal with local agreements on things like BSI etc.

At the moment after making some noises before the recent London dispute its gone all quiet at HQ again, when i hope you
agree that reps and members need urgent clarification on where we are with Royal Mail and the consequences of BT2010.
What way out of this mess?

Adrian - thank God for someone with sense bout the Monday-Friday matter. My reps keep saying its got no support from HQ. Seems to be sod members.

I'm sorry but anyone with a policy that would see 1 in 6 of us out of a job ( mon - fri) would not get my vote even if I was still in the union

using the argument that we are experiencing job losses anyway is madness - so you want to add to the job losses so people can have a lie in on a saturday????

every single one of us knew the job involved Saturdays when we started - yes it is now a later finish - but if that is not suitable for you get another job, don't sacrifice your colleagues for a lie in

it's attitudes like this that made me leave the union in the first place

Apart from the extra job losses the subject of Mon-Fri working is much more complicated than it first appears.
Royal Mail would most likely want to withdraw the various different attendance patterns in delivery.
Would those on a 4 day week be as keen to give it up for a straight Mon-Fri?,would those on a 9 day fortnight or the week off scheme?
There would also be a reduction in earning opportunities and an increase in Mon-Fri workload which as we know our employer would expect us to absorb.
And of course Mon-Fri in delivery will not mean Mon-Fri in processing.

Why did you not try to achieve any of the above whilst you were YAC chair, and sitting on the PEC on that basis, since even though you were there in an ex officio basis (in the interests of the YAC as a whole), the above is certainly of interest to all young members across the wider union
