Mapping the Future: 2011 Edition

LTB 1030/10 gave branches an update on the Mapping the Future project and enclosed the first edition of the Mapping the Future publication.

Since that time, fresh data has become available on a number of the areas covered by the document. In addition, assisted by Assistant Secretary Simon Sapper and Head of Research Natalie Jacottet, we gave a presentation of Mapping the Future to regional committee meetings.

The additional information and feedback from regional committee meetings confirmed the view that the subject areas covered by Mapping the Future was of interest and of use to branches, regions and the union as a whole, in terms of understanding our position in economy and also in respect of the performance of other trade unions.

The new information and feedback has also enabled us to revise Mapping the Future and an electronic copy is attached: a hard copy will sent in the branch despatch.

A new feature of the 2011 edition has been the inclusion of data about every branch in the union and what has happened to their membership over the course of 2011.

At a well attended fringe meeting at Annual Conference last week, there were many suggestions from the floor on ways in which this project could and should be developed further. It is certainly the intention to make Mapping the Future a living document which is updated annually - in many ways not dissimilar to the now well established Pay Handbook.
