Becoming a union rep??

Hello

Can anyone give me advice on becoming a rep?I have approached my local rep about going on courses but when ever he gives me a date he cancels on me.I get the feeling that he does not take me serious because am only 28yrs old and don't have enough experience.

I am on sick leave at the moment with Planta Fetiseais in both feet and was wondering if there are contacts available?

Also if I decide to leave royal mail later in the future would it still be possible to carry on duties with CWU in other areas?

Firstly you have to get elected or apply for any vacant positions and get nominated, I think every branch has them. I believe that any branch would only be too willing to have someone as enthusiastic as you age is not a barrier in fact 28 is quite mature!
I would have a word with your branch secretary it is his duty to ensure branch positions are filled and that all reps attend training courses these traditionaly used to take part in the early or later part of the year.

If you are overweight (or even simply a fat bastard) then your initial enquiry about becoming a rep will do no harm.

Thereafter, Step 2 will see you become lazier & lazier - sometimes you won't even do a duty, yet get paid handsomely, not forgetting your Union payment and other little perks!

Step 3 can see "FatBoy" siding up to management - a classic example of being sold down the river by CWU (as a whole)

Stage 4 is when the Rep doesn't give a s**t..or is that simply step 1 ??!!

Point 5 is when you become Hayes & Ward's PR man - all fatties together!

If you said this about any other group it would be considered racist. Does anyone who espouse these views not realise that all reps are human and because they are you will get great ones, mediocre and crap ones. To write them all off because of one bad experience is narrow minded and to be frank completely against Union values.

FIRST YOU WILL HAVE TO BE NOMINATED BY MEMBERS IN YOUR OFFICE.
IF A VACANCY ARISES THEN GET SOME OF YOUR COLLEAGUES TO NOMINATE YOU.
I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG YOU HAVE WORKED FOR RM BUT EXPERIENCE DOES COUNT.
THE LONGER YOU HAVE WORKED THE MORE EXPERIENCE YOU WILL HAVE IN TACKLING WORK RELATED ISSUES.
ASK YOUR BRANCH SECRETARY TO RECOMMEND YOU FOR COURSES WHICH ARE IDEAL IN THE WORKPLACE THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN ELECTED.
BE HONEST WITH YOUR MEMBERS,IF YOU HAVE INFO REGARDING ANYTHING TO DO WITH ROYAL MAIL LET THE MEMBERS KNOW DON'T PRETEND YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING.
DON'T BE CLOSE TO MANAGEMENT AS GOOD MATES.
ATTEND ALL MEETINGS YOUR AREA REP OR BRANCH HOLD.
DON'T BE LIKE OTHER REPS WHO KEEP EVERYTHING TO THEMSELVES.
DON'T FORGET WHO ELECTED YOU.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE PRESENT ON THE OFFICE FLOOR WHENEVER POSSIBLE YOUR PRESENCE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE WORKPLACE.
MAKE YOURSELF APPROACHABLE.
DON'T GET ANGRY WHEN MEMBERS DON'T AGREE.
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT SOMETHING DON'T BLUFF, SEEK ADVICE FROM YOUR FELLOW REPS OR AREA REP.
AS A REP MEMBERS THINK THAT YOU WILL BE IN THE UNION ROOM MOST OF THE TIME DON'T LET THEM THINK THAT, GIVE THEM YOUR ASSURANCES AND TELL THEM WHERE THEY CAN FIND YOU IF NEEDED.
I HAVE BEEN A REP FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND WHEN MEMBERS SAY YOU'VE GOT IT EASY I TELL THEM,NEXT TIME THEIR IS VACANCIES FOR REPS THEN APPLY AND SEE HOW EASY IT IS.SO DON'T BE AFRAID OF BECOMING A REP JUST GO FOR IT.

A lot of members may think that the BTA is a cock and bull swindle but without the agreement we would have been without a job long time ago.

Don't go spoiling it now KANTI.
The BT agreement was only ratified a year ago and has had a disastrous effect on the business,it's staff and their futures...it doesn't matter who you blame for that,it's a fact.
If anything this farce of an agreement has pushed us all closer to the dole queue..not further away.

Yes there are other roles open to you, my former branch sec took a VR package last year but is staying active as branch editor and will be looking after the branch website. A ADR from from the good ol days now retired is our retired members officer at my branch.
