holidays

today our line manager handed out our holiday sheets and remarked that many people had not got quite what they had asked for, also that from here on nobody would be allowed annual leave throughout the month of decemeber.

obviously a few people carrying on as they had marked down time in december and that they could have tried for a different week had we known beforehand.

my sheet arrived attatched to the afore mentioned lino and a quick scan over it revealed i had no holidays in july/aug (summer hols).

i mentioned this to him and he remarked that the summer had all been taken.

we do have 2 children and were planning driving to france as we did last year for the first time and loved it. now im faced with telling them that the grinch that is royal fail has stolen summer holidays from here on!

i know the answer is "RM are not family friendly" but worth asking if i have an argument i suppose.

any help would be much appreciated,

Why not, December?

Since Royal Mail said there was no such thing as Christmas pressure, we've been able to book A/L throughout December, Hell, even DOMs are known to be away during what was once known as the two-weeks Christmas pressure, sounds like the management in your area fancy having their cake and eating it this year.
Tell 'em to f**k themselves, they abolished Christmas pressure, not you.

december is out across deliverys from here on due to flu epidemic.
our leave was not alocated until now due to management failings, other offices that have theirs sorted are ok till next year.

Jonny a couple of questions mate
1.How many people in your office?
2.How many people are on leave per week in July/August?
3.What is your seniority within your office?
4.Is this the first signing for the period and is it a block signing,ie 2 weeks together?

dont know how many people off in summer but will find out tomorrow (the queue for doms office was enormous upon hearing the news).
im prob about 30th in office.
it was my 2/3/4 choice, 3 week block.

Am i right in saying that you signed for your first choice elsewhere in the Year?
if thats the case then to be honest im not suprised that you did not get July/August,these months are all ways first to go and should have been your first choice.
Ask your rep to ask the Dom to open up more slots to accomadate your needs.If that dont work ask someone who has signed for the slots you want if they could swap.

No July/August for me either but then our summer leave number has been reduced to 5 for the previous years 8, still I had a good rant about it and threatened them with a grievence.......................just to see the colour drain from their faces

When Doms sort out the leave the first thing they must do is work out the unit leave allocation and divide it by the number of staff+reserves (think thats how its done)and that will give them a spread and show how many slots they can have.More slots should be given in the summer to give everyone a chance of getting a decent holiday.
At our place we sign for our 2 week slot first,no breaking it up,unless you want a week at your own choice.Anyone who does not get there first pick will revert to the top for next years signing(as per way forward)and we then sign for our weeks of next and then odd days last of all.
To get 3 weeks off on the spin is very very rare unless you have been very lucky.

its all been a last min rush due to staffing issues and the dom been off since xmas, he came back yesterday and the sheets were out today.
most of the office were unhappy and i honestly think lino will find a happy medium (not too bad a guy).
i have had 3 weeks for the last 3 years with no probs though.
i suppose with staff levels falling the number of people off will have to drop due to cover issue (didnt see it in the BT2010 though)

in previous years we had 3 computer programmes that ran all the offices requests and the one with the highest % was used, but new DOM is a straight c*** and like i say it will have been rushed through at all cost.
will see what tomorrow brings.
