Outsourced call centre workers win union recognition

This month the Communication Workers Union has won the right to negotiate pay and conditions for a group of call centre and helpdesk staff in Liverpool. The workers covered by the deal are employed by Adecco at an outsourced facility managed by IBM on behalf of Virgin Media.

Reps attended workshops and training courses in order to organise on site and represent fellow workers at discipline or grievance hearings. As membership grew, a formal approach was made to Adecco for recognition at the Albert Dock site.

John East, CWU national organising secretary, said: “We jointly agreed to involve ACAS, who then certified that over 50 per cent of the workforce had become members of the union. Discussions were then intensified to conclude the detail of the recognition agreement. The active members in Adecco were magnificent. They convinced their fellow workers to join the union in large numbers, and supported by their branch – Liverpool clerical – and the field organisers from the organising department we secured the deal. “The next steps are to hold on site elections for the official reps positions, as well as to continue to build our membership. “The active members are now discussing the priorities the union needs to address in the workplace.”
