christmas holidays, shafted by the union

Post by vinny »

hello.
i am writing today in disgust at the unions agreement about the holiday over the christmas and new year period.
we have been informed by our union rep (name removed) that if any persons day off falls on christmas day or new years day they
will not get a day in lieu back. that means a person like me who has every saturday off will work an extra day both weeks for
the same pay! the unions reps reply to this was 80% of the workforce benefit and 20% loose out my response was where is the
fairness in that the union prides it self on fairness for all the workforce.

example 1.
week commencing 20/12/10, 20% of workers will work mon-fri 5 days and have sat of with no lieu day
80% of workers will work 4 out the 5 days of and have sat off. ALL FOR THE SAME PAY!

example 2.
week commencing 27/12/10, 20% of workers will work wed-fri 3days and have sat of with no lieu day
40% of workers will work wed-fri and have sat off and get a lieu day for mon or tues.
40% of will work only 2 out of the whole week. ALL FOR THE SAME PAY!
the union needs to sort this out asap as i myself and many colleagues' across the country will withdraw from the union due to the lack of fairness.

1. Please do not start 3 threads (1 in privatisation  ) all with the same post - its like your spamming us.

and as an ordinary member don't blame your rep he did not come up with the agreement. HQ did, and its the same as last years as well. I understand your upset about it many are but still taking it out on your rep is a pointless exercise he had nothing to do with it.

What you have not been told it appears, is that the CWU have not walked away from the issue of Xmas day and New Years day. It is a seperate issue from the Xmas arrangements and should be concluded one way or the other early on in 2011. Wait and see what happens and hold your fire for a little while.

It's fine Daz...the moment has passed...the chance to win hearts and minds gone. :wave
It isn't likely to be an issue again until 2016 and who knows what state either the company or the union will be in by then.
It was an issue last year and with 4 months of protracted negotiations and overnighters in hotels it should not have been an issue this year. :evil/mad

It's just the way it is unfortunately. My long weekend over christmas and same with s**t loads of others! Someone elses last year and someone elses next.

And I would also, gladly, swap a weeks leave for every Saturday off!

Just crack on with it. It's Christmas were meant to be busy and normal patterns are out of the window.

Won't be long until it's shorts and t shirts and fook all mail again.

Rough and smooth - let it get you down and it only makes things worse!

Right on fishtank. Useless union. Hayes and Ward won't be in at work for a couple of weeks probably, so why bother about their 80,000 odd member's interests. :evil/mad :dcfo :ncfo

Wait until bank holidays are called non service days and not given in lieu. This is the thin end of a much bigger wedge.
I have not been affected by this yet, but I find it appalling.

No and neither will those who lose it this year.
If a solution is found and it's a big IF...it would be a solution going forward...not backwards.
In my opinion Royal Mail will not fund an extra lieu day but there are other solutions from re-scheduling day's off to an employee funded extra day off taken from annual leave...across the board :nervous .

What has to be stopped right now though is this management practice of deliberately scheduling reserves day off to coincide with a non-service day...that is a shameful abuse of the system.

The CWU could not force Royal Mail into giving a day off in leiu for the Saturday which is a non sevice day. Royal Mail would not budge so what was the CWU meant to do call everyone out on strike ? Not a great move considering some of the comments on here about people not wanting to strike over pensisons/

Now lets not mistake bank holidays for non serivce days , Bank holidays do not occur at weekends. Remember in the past up to 6 years ago employees used to have to plough the hours which you would have worked on the non service day back into the other days per week . It was called claw back the union managed to remove this via an agreement.

The union had to decide did we have a christmas agreement or not as we could not achieve a day in leiu , the PEC decided it was right to have a deal as the agreement including when the xmas bonus was paid and other xmas pay issues and other aspects.

Tell me what you would have done would you have been willing to go on strike to get a day in leiu ? I doubt anyone would have !! So the union could not achieve this objective.

The union should be able to turn water into wine, in some members eyes.
Then pour it into their mouths for them, cause to do it themselves would take too much effort and thought.
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.
