Advice please! Management 'banking' hours?

Post by Erith 'Erbert »

Can some one please clarify the rules and regulations regarding our manager's latest claim. Tuesday I phoned up my office whilst still on delivery and told them that I would not be able to complete my round (I also warned them of this before I went out) but I was willing to stay out and finish my last two bags in the snow. They told me that they would not be prepared to pay overtime for me to complete my round and I should come back to the office at my finishing time which I did.
Today we were not allowed to go out on our rounds and were all kept indoors watching safety videos, sorting and preping walks. We were then told at 11am that they were closing the office and we were all sent home. My managers now insist that despite my willingness to stay and work until the end of my duty (2pm) they would be 'banking' three hours which they would expect us all to make up when we recommence deliveries. They insist that this has been agreed by the union. I argued that I wasn't prepared to work past 2pm without being paid and I would refuse to go home early today so that they couldn't say that I owed them anything. I was then ordered to leave the premises.
Surely this is wrong? Can I really be expected to work flexitime to suit them in this manor or are they misquoting procedures and agreements from the latest deal that was agreed on our behalf by the union?

Deffo wrong,no such agreement of banking hours, ppl can't just work 3 hours over their time!! It's not your fault if they can't give u a full days work! Get the union on the case! For what they r worth!

Ask them to show you where "Banking of Hours" has been agreed - you'll be waiting a long time, and they'll have problems coding you for it, especially as you were willing to work over yesterday & they refused, and doubtless you were willing to work all of your hours today ( even if that meant you might be cleaning the tea room, sweeping the floor, scrubbing the bogs, etc ), but your managers released you...if they push it, get hold of your rep, explain the situation to your screw in front of the rep, and suggest he either gives you a written and signed order to work banked hours, or conduct code you on the spot! And if your rep is about as useful as a left handed wank, get onto HQ & get your area rep's number, and tell him what's going on!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Mail delivery; those that can, do, those that can't, MANAGE!

Thanks for your replies.
I have contacted our ex union rep (we don't have a current one) and he says they have no right to bank these hours either. He's now contacting our area rep to get clarification on this.

Area rep has just confirmed that my managers were (as usual) talking complete and utter crap! We owe them nothing. There is no such thing as 'banked' hours. The management may ASK me to complete your delivery if I'm left with just a bundle or so at the end of my delivery as a good will gesture but I'm within my rights to say no. And after the scam my managers have just tried to pull there will be no gestures of good will from me any time soon!

CWU HQ made the following statement:
There is no provision within the Pay & Modernisation Agreement for the clawback of any time as a result of what is tantamount to an 'act of God' i.e. the severe weather conditions that the UK is currently experiencing.

Thanks for reading.

Area rep talking bollocks mate. They cannot force you to work over your contracted hours per day. There is no agreement and as already been said just ask your area rep or dom for a copy of the national agreement
that states this.

My area rep contacted our local rep this morning and informed him the exact same info that we can either owe the hours or take a days leave instead. As usual our particular area rep is a useless turd, reminds me of his 10 minute meeting when he urged us to vote 'YES'!!!

These area reps need to contact CWU HQ ad ask for an immediate update on this as Royal Mail managers will always take full advantage of any misinformed or naive union rep.
