Wow! I'm shocked about that. I work in the same region (NW England), and we've never had any problems with the Area/Divisional Reps. Far from it, they're normally great. :confused Have they given any reason for not backing up your local Reps?
Other than the "don't want to rock the boat" excuse.

Also, I'd get your Rep to ask why they're working so hard to help some Reps, and not others. :mad

Bypass!!!

A lot of the grumbles I read on here should take measures into their own hands and go straight to Bob Gibson/acting indoor sec, Dave Ward and the entire PEC. Heck why not grumble to the CWU president as well!!!

Dont sit on your laurels, you never know you might get a taste for activisim. :Applause

Mr Deeds,
we are in a neighbouring region, but are/have faced exactly the problems you are,it's easy for Big Daz to say go above,or bypass your local officials, but the reality is you are always re-directed back to resolve under 'local agreement'
Things have actually got worse since the 'new relationship' you can't claim overtime if you 'go over' because the manager insists you finished early the other day, people have been conducted for trivial misdemeanours, and we have been threatened to have our pay stopped if we refuse to lapse(or should i say follow a reasonable instruction)
Plenty have given up with the union in our office, and have cancelled their subscriptions(myself included)not because of the new agreement(D2D's etc)but because locally we are battling against not just our manager, but our own branch!

Same in our office rep in our office told by dom & planner stop putting obstecales in the way, they are doing just what they want rep is not allowed to disagree with them, area rep always seems to side with management, whats the point of being in a union that will not back its members.

Have your local Reps had any explination from the area/div Reps, as to why they're not providing them backup, when they're working so hard for other Reps?

I'm not trying to defend them, in this case. But I just don't understand why they appear to be showing favouritism. I mean, why back some Reps up to the hilt, and leave others with no backup at all? :confused :mad

I realise that you're in a small office. But that's not the point is it?
All Reps should be able to count on equal treatment by their area/div Reps. This is a disgraceful situation! :no no

Midlands office, we have the same situation DOM does whatever he wants, rep has gone through all the channels. Finally after a year of trying to persuade his superiors to take it to division and "rock that boat" division send it back and told to deal with it on a local level.

The rep says he can write as many letters and greivences as he can but at the end of the day if the dom ignores and the cwu hierarchy do nothing about that, then effectively hes powerless

It will depend on the issue sometimes an office does not like what they are being told from the divison or even the area rep.

However if you do still feel agrieved do what daz says but first and foremost CWU HQs will ask for a report from the Branch and the Division.

If you like to state the issue which you feel has not been taken up the I would comment further.

Fishtank the reason there is a Branch and Divisional structure is to support the local members and due to the fact that 6 National officers and 17 PEC members cannot do everything that the area reps and divisonal reps do and cannot support on their own 1500 offices and 60 odd mail centres and VOCs , Crown offices , Romec , Quadrant, RDCs and SPDOs.

Of course they did,... "local" is the most commonly used word in Transformation etc..2010.

The agreement will be consistently deployed at local level with continuity of service in a way that means managerial executive action and industrial action become unnecessary.

Both parties are fully committed to all elements of this national agreement and neither will sanction any local negotiations which seek to change the principles or spirit of this agreement and/or make their deployment less effective and/or delay implementation.

The Industrial Relations Framework will still apply but the focus will be on joint problem solving and working together to develop practical solutions at local level. The formal disagreement procedure will only be used as a very last resort.

Issues should be resolved at the lowest possible level. If the Industrial Relations Framework procedure is utilised issues will be finally resolved at Regional/Divisional level.

Only in the event that there is a genuine issue arising from the interpretation of the agreement should it be flagged nationally so that it can be clarified as quickly as possible. Points of interpretation will be shared by both parties through a jointly produced document.

Don't bother us we're busy seems to be the point they are trying to make. :whistle

I think that's the question though dingo...

Are these guys, especially the area reps pulling their weight?...in some areas they may be but they are certainly not supporting 1500 offices etc. Some offices haven't seen their area reps in months and probably couldn't pick them out of a line up.
That is embarrassing and unacceptable, area reps should be visiting units on a regular basis without waiting for an invite, especially units with no representation.
This is by far the most complicated agreement from a local point of view that we have ever attempted..as you said yourself it probably the biggest change to working practices any of us can remember and there are many ways in which it can be abused by management at local and national level.
Many local reps have little training and are usually in the position because no-one else would do it.They deserve to be applauded for giving up a lot of free time for what is a thankless task but more importantly they deserve to be supported...not hung out to dry by those above them and then inevitably blamed for being weak.....again.

Most definetley the case for me, If somebody else wanted to take over I would more than happy to stand aside. I would love to just come into work each day get my head down get on my work and get myself home on time. If I did that now I would feel like when the going gets tough Big Daz walks away.
