Rotating day off
Hi Guys, I just started with royal mail...I'm a bit confused about the rotating day off!!! 1st week I was off on Wednesday, 2nd week off on Thursday, 3rd week off on Friday. 4th week off on MONDAY...??? 5th week off on Monday...??? when I asked why I didn't get off on Satauday on week 4 I was told that because I'm on a "temporary contract (5 months 20 hours a week) I wont be getting any Saturday off!!! I checked the job description and it states hours of work 10am to 2 pm Monday to Saturday with a rotating day off...not rotating day off between Monday and Friday...Anyone have any ideas what the right way is???

This is a difficult one To be honest.
I would say that you have a right to be treated the same as everyone else and if you want to pursue this go and see the local CWU rep (even if not in the CWU) to get their advice and make sure that there are no local agreements which mean that this is how people are usually treated. Based on his advice you could just havea word with the manager, or you could go Nuclear and bang in a B&H complaint or a grievance.
However, don't forget that although they cant treat you any differently because you are standing up for your rights, if you do it is inevitable that you will become "known" and therefore this may have a bearing on whether they keep you on at the end of the contract. You have to ask yourself if raising this as a problem now, is worth it in the long run, only you can decide.

The rotating day system is a shambles.
I've been there 7 months, and had at least 85% of the days off on a Monday or Tuesday (the lightest days by a mile), and had ONE Saturday off in that time, which I'd booked off!
Very rarely will I get a Wednesday off, and I can completely forget about a Thursday onwards day off. It would be nice to have a heavy day off once in a while.

Been at RM 7 years and not had a Saturday off unless sick or leave

just bear in mind that oyu are on a temp contract
whilst i agree you have every right to your days off like everyone else (and i will be starting a post on this myself)
weigh up the bigger picture at this point
