ill health retirement
hi im fifty six in december and have been with royal mail for thirteen years.two years ago i had a full knee replacement had seven months off work started back january 2009.Since then knee has been getting more and more painfull, walk is taking me longer each day and really struggling off work at moment due to pain.Doctor has referred me back to hospital where i think as he said they will tell me that walking for over four hours a day is not the right job.If not offered an indoor job by royal mail would it be worth going for ill heelth retirement and if so could i take my pension at the same time.

i think you will be given a choice of IHR :-
1- IHR with lump sum (you won't be able to find other work for 9 months after RM IHR)
2- IHR with immediate pension - (you will prob never be able to work [paid employment] ever again before State retirement age)
it will be you who decides - the cwu can't decide for you, the cwu can assist in any appeal for/against IHR.
my personal opinion would be best get cwu onboard to get you the indoor job?

Re: ill health retirement
its not the employee who decides what kind of IHR you are given...Its in the opinion of the ATOS Doctor who after weighing up the medical evidence makes his/her recommendation to your DOM/Shift manager.
If everyone who was given IHR had the choice on which IHR they were given, the pension fund would be in a worse meltdown than it is now...
