Part timers and holiday!!!!!

Post by raikkonen85 »

we had work time learning a couple weeks ago what a waste of time we was trying to agree on something new but took 1 hour to stick with an old thing. anyway. what came up was the fact over the last 2 years weve lost 6 full times gained 1 full time and a couple part time. and the manager said we still have plenty of hours a hand to cope :s

i was thinking about the poor part timers . most of them have familes and moragages and kids so most of them do a walk and a half a day. when it gets to holiday we know they just get their contract hours.

why cant royal mail pay part timers the average hours theyve been working for the last year. royal mail could and should do this just like they payed the bonus based on average hours work. how hard can it be. something like the manager tells HR a postie is on holiday and to ask for the average hours worked in the last year then pay thme this. i know it goes against their plan to save money from introducing 20 hr contracts but give em a break. they work hard and put up with more crap than anyone else in our office.

Its difficult to tell your colleagues not to do any overtime. But thats exactly what they are going to have to do, if any one of them wants a full time contract.

Of course not all of them are going to get that contract, and some will find it hard to keep to a budget over the coming weeks or months, but that is the only solution they have if they want a decent wage when it comes to holiday pay.

I agree with you 100%. I have been covering a full time walk for 12 months now and the last two weeks I have been off on holiday. :dance
I have been paid my 30hr contract rate for these weeks. When I rang HR re. this they said, and I quote, "all overtime hours are voluntary and so do not come into the calculation for the previous 12 weeks average hours worked." :arrrghhh
Look at page 7 of this ACAS document! http://www.acas.org.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=955&p=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
RM HR say this is irrelevant owing to the extra 10 hrs per week being " voluntary" overtime! Bullsh!t!! If the walk etc. is a full time one I feel we should be paid the full time hours whilst on holiday!

if a worker’s pay varies with the
amount of work done then the
amount of a week’s pay is the
pay for the normal weekly
working hours multiplied by the
workers average hourly rate over
the preceding 12 weeks. This
may occur under a piece work,
bonus or commission system.
To calculate the average hourly
rate, only hours where the
worker was working, and the pay related to them, should be taken into
account. Overtime hours can be included although pay for these hours
should be adjusted to the normal rate. Any week in which no pay was
due, for hours worked, should be replaced by the last previous week in
which pay was received for hours worked.'

kinda says it should be based on hours worked and not contract hours, regardless or whether the time work was volentary or not?

Yep indeed, massive scam by RM .

If i remember correctly, someone on here ( whiteoak ? ) took RM to court over this issue and won ( without any backing from the spineless CWU )
'Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left,' ( Liam Byrne MP )
