It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Hi i am a rep,and while there are is no written agreement regarding absorption, i managed to cease it for 4 months as managers did not follow local guidelines. It should be where capacity exists, We would do ours first but by doing the job properly,we then had postman failing to complete their own duties. I now have a signed agreement where no-one does absorption more than 3 times a week, sometimes less. At the end of the day they cant give you extra work if you have not got the capacity within your duty time.

i'd take a leap of faith venom and suggest to you that only those that are requested to perfrom absorbtion.

ABSORPTION – SOME SIMPLE GUIDELINES.

• FIRST THING TO DO IS STOP COMING IN EARLY. START ON TIME

• MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR FULL MEAL RELIEF ENTITLEMENT

• MEAL RELIEF’S SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AT THE END OF DUTIES

• PUT ALL ADDITIONAL POUCHES OUT

• ADHERE TO THE POUCH WEIGHT MATRIX OR 1st POUCH 16KG MAX - REST 11KG MAX

• DO NOT USE PRIVATE CARS ON DELIVERY

Extract from National Agreement below.

‘Both parties are committed to introducing new ways of working throughout the business by April 2008. (Revised timescales have subsequently been nationally agreed) In order to achieve this there will be a trial in four offices per AGM area covering the following:
- New arrangements to cover for one another and develop sensible options to absorb absences, and increased workload, where time exists within normal hours
- To ensure all paid work hours are utilised
- To creates a working environment where employees, CWU reps and managers feel valued and motivated.
This flexibility could also facilitate arrangements for employees to make their own arrangements to cover and swap duties (subject to approval from their manager) – within contracted hours, providing quality of service is not adversely affected and there are no additional costs to the business’.

• Bombard managers with requests to finish early, start late and swap duties

• CWU reps should ask managers to demonstrate how they have identified spare capacity on a delivery. Also how have they come up with the amount of work that is being asked to absorb. Can we see the calculation? This is a perfectly reasonable request. If you are not happy invoke the IR Framework.• Remember members cannot be forced to work beyond their time. The key is ABSORPTION not extension.

i believe they should.

for your benefit you should start documenting this and then present it to your local then area rep and branch secretary just to cover your ar*e.
if the situation continues go to HQ with your proof.
Next thing you know you'll be told to but 739's through doors saying you attempted delivery when you haven't.
At the end of the day the LM does what they're told regardless of right or wrong. and will keep doing it until the sh*t hits the spinny thing, and when it does YOU will be hung out to dry, soory to be so bleak but it is unfortunately what i believe would happen.
The DSM's and directors spew out these orders to DOM's who in turn pass the buck to their LM's because they've mucked up.
The only people who see a problem with this are blue collar workers and the press when they want to go union bashing.
The funny (ironic)thing is it's never a white collar workers fault.
e.g. bankers, need i say any more.
