driving a van with no AA training

Hi! my boss asked me to drive a van, but i have not been AA trained. I told him that i thought i was not allowed to drive a van as i thought i won't be covered by the insurance as i did not have the AA training. Can someone tell me what is the rule for this.

i think, or maybe hope, you are refering to a changeover.
It is policy for all driver to have a changeover to ensure that they are competent in the required vehicle.
Yes you may well hold a license although you may have only ever driven a car

Your normal licence allows you to drive up to 3.5 tonne so as long as you're not driving a vehicle larger than that you will be covered by insurance.

The Royal Mail Drivers Risk Assesment does require you to have a change over as a MUST!

MMm.. in our office at least, you could drive a wee van with your ordinary licence, but need to have held it for a stipulated period of time. Driving the bigger vans, you should be properly assessed.

Managers and posties have been taken of driving because they have not had a change over,that's right,a manager had to have a change over as well!

Unless you've passed your test before the late 90's (sorry I can't remember the exact date), in which case you can drive up to a 7.5T vehicle. But just because you're licenced, it doesn't mean that you're covered by RM's Insurance.

Possibly,but when i ask they will ask,wtf do you want that for.

Now trust me with what i have posted above as the truth.

You may have to go to a 'traffic manager' for info,but if you push hard enough you will get something.................HR perhaps?

My DOM was letting new entrants drive the crew bus with passengers without even checking if they had their own car licence never mind an AA test or such like.

If they're driving the Crew Buses (presumably more than 5 seats), they need a PSV licence. I know you don't need one, if you're using a vehicle like that to carry your friends/Family around. But if you're driving it as part of your job (for hire/reward), then it's ILLEGAL to drive it without a PSV licence.

If you're not correctly licenced, then any insurance is invalidated. So anyone being caught driving them without the correct licence, would be charged with driving without a licence (because it wouldn't be valid for the vehicle) AND driving uninsured.
