£3 a week for the union, should i withdraw my membership??

seems that the union have lost more or less all its power in royal mail, just as this agreement is cumin to destroy the job.

there is no time for reps in our office, they r expected to do union duties whilst carrying out full duties, ie. no release..

so why am i paying £3 a week eh????? to me that could be another payrise of over £150 a year and all i have to do is nothing for it.... can anyone give me a good reason to stay/leave the union, i hav lost all patients... union reps in our office go drinking every friday with the office DOM, how sick does that turn ur stomach

If you really think the new agreement is going to be that bad then stay and vote NO. Otherwise, and this may appear extreme, but if you leave and allow the Yes vote to win partly because you could not vote, then you will have stuck the knife in on your mates.

If the deal gets agreed then I will think once again whether staying in or not is good for me, or good for posties in general, but I will not make that decision to leave until I have had a vote, which IMHO is as it should be.

I would wait at least until the agreement is published and fully understood before making any decisions.

Although the union may not be the best, they are the only fight against the scum that run this company.

However the question should be if you are so unhappy (and there is a lot of us that are) what can we do about it?

No matter how inept the union are we are better off with one than we would be without one. if enough people leave Royal Mail will just de reconise the union.

Yeah, just think if we didn't have a union, and it didn't fight for us or give some of the money we pay-in to a political party, then where would we be ? We'd have the government of the day letting all sorts of private companies cream off RM's profits and some unelected tw@t threaten to sell a chunk of OUR postal service to one of the very private companies that's profiting from CWU members' own hard work. Thank God the union hasn't let any of that happen ...

I have little time or confidence in the National CWU ,I think its out of touch with its grass roots.

I do however have great respect for my local rep,its just a pity he is not in charge Nationaly.

At present it is very difficult not to fall foul of 1 of RM many rules,you only have to read this forum to kow that,if some of the stuff being leaked is true regarding standards and BSI
its going to be even more diificult.

I pay for the fire brigade hoping I will never need them,but I want them their if i do need them.

I think its foolish to quit the CWU over national issues,you might be shooting yourself in the foot.

If a massive NO vote is sent to HQ in voting for this agreement ,sureley people need to step aside and let people in with fresh ideas, who represent the grassroots.

I say we need new blood into the CWU Nationaly and more local as well ,like our area Rep office does everything the company wants ,such as car on deliveries etc.

This dispute has been poorly organised right from the start
HQ took far too long to get involved,the strikes were in my opinion called off to early,the interim agreement which was nothing more than a "No Strike Agreement" and this absolute farce of a negotiation period which has dragged on and on with little communication to the general membership.
Those at the top do need to step aside as well as ineffectual area and divisional reps who have allowed and in some cases encouraged the fragmentation of this union.
As for the agreement i will reserve my judgement although i don't like the sound of the "snippets" that are being leaked through this forum.
Leave the union? No
Accept their ineptitude? Definately not

If it were'nt for my local rep I'd stop my subs immediately. HQ are out of touch with the workforce and if they f**k up this time they will pay the price with a largely reduced membership.

As union members, we are ALL "the union". There is more strength in numbers however ineffective you think "the union" is. Try negotiating your own terms and conditions and see how far you get.

The membership is very much reduced as it is. I'm not leaving. How can we can bin the likes of Hayes and Ward and that whole mob of self-interested goons if we don't have a say in the ballot? Yes, they are out of touch with the workforce. How could it be otherwise? Socialists used to say the likes of Hayes and Ward were 'reformists'. They're not even that anymore because they never win any reforms. Better to stay in, vote out bad deals, vote out bad union bosses (because bosses is what they are) and take the fight to the wide boys running Royal Mail.

taking the 150 as a payrise may be a good idea if youre union branch is anything like ours.no chance of any new blood getting into it, with the you get me votes and i will get you votes mentallity.our reps have totally lost touch with reallity and maybe if they wernt sitting on handy duties and tried doing a 4hour walk they would realise that.lets get some fight back into this union with real workers making decisions about our future and not some fat ,lazy brown nosers.
