Business leaders called on the Government to intervene in the dispute, warning that the effect on companies, especially
smaller firms of another strike will be ``profound''.

A spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses said: ``A payment delayed in the post can mean the difference between life and death for a small firm.

``A resolution must be found before next Thursday, and the Government cannot sit on the sidelines any longer.

A lot of these small businesses are living from hand to mouth. Since Neil Hamilton (of brown envelope and mad wife fame) pushed through a bill to enable supermarkets to sell newspapers, fewer people are calling into the local shop for a paper. They can't compete with supermarkets at all and I hear many have gone out of business completely in the south where booze and cigarette runs from the continent have really brought down income.

maybe we should all take a lesson from what you have just said. Supermarkets do get the lions share and we know that its easier to go to one shop.

But in the light of the FSB lobbying for us, maybe all postmen should think about where they shop from now on and try to give some of the support back to the local business.

It would be great if this happened, but like a lot of DO`s, people are too interested in Self , to do it.

I think you have hit on something there. The only problem is when it comes to making the cash last a bit longer, it's far cheaper to shop in supermarkets for food etc, but for things like newspapers and magazines and other items which are the same price anywhere, why not do as you suggest and support the smaller business?
