Re: permanent contract
I believe if you are taken on as a RM employee you are on a 6 month trial basis then you get taken on permanent. If you are a temp I remember someone telling me if you are still with RM after 12 months they either have to let you go or take you on permanently.

Re: permanent contract
thanks for the reply.
I was taken on as a temp for 6months. I thought that after 12months I would be made permanent, however they said that after 2 yrs you would be permanent (I think!) Then I was lead to believe that after 2 yrs RM were legally obliged to make you perm. I phoned human resourses this morning to see if this was the case, they said it was after 4 yrs!!! I was told by my dom earlier in the yr that all people with less than 2 yrs service, would have their hours automatically cut down to 25. I thought i was out of the woods but it seems as though the 25 hr contract is still hanging over my head. :(

Re: permanent contract
4 years is correct I'm afraid, this comes under the The Fixed-term Employees (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2002.

I think the question you may have wanted to ask was if you would be made "Full time" and I think we all
know the answer to that

I think they can keep you on temporary contracts for up to 2 years maximum before they have to make you perminent or stop renewing

Re: permanent contract
I started on a 12 month 24 hour contract. After the 12 months was up I was made permanent with a 30 hour contract. That was a while ago though, I think if I was in the same position now they would more than likely show me the door.

How long can an employer keep on renewing a fixed-term contract?
An employee can be kept on successive fixed-term contracts for a limit of four years. If your contract is renewed after that you become a permanent employee. This is unless the employer can show a good reason why you should stay on a fixed-term contract. Only service from 10 July 2002 is counted towards the four-year limit.
The four-year limit was introduced to prevent employers abusing the use of successive fixed-term contracts to limit employees' employment rights. The limit can be changed by employers and employees agreeing a 'workforce' or 'collective' agreement. This agreement should then provide an alternative scheme for preventing the abuse of fixed-term contracts.
Workplace or collective agreements can vary the limit on the length or number of successive contracts used by an employer. They can also limit the use of successive contracts and set a list of reasons to justify renewals of fixed-term contracts.
