can understand the fear among your members of job losses, and that successive governments have sold the Post Office down the river in favour of the courier cowboys. In this I support you, but I would also like to say that the labour movement needs no more martyrs; we have enough already.

You obviously know far better than me that Mandelson and Crozier are looking for an excuse to destroy the CWU, very much like Maggie did to the miners in 1985. I ask that you fight clever and do not fall into the same trap that Scargill did. Do not allow the postmen to be put into a position that they are beaten up by policemen in the middle of the night out of the view of the media.

Work at getting public support. Use civil disobedience where it will work. Don’t picket sorting offices, picket Crozier’s home, Mandelson’s home and every thieving MP’s house you can find. Your guys should know where they live. Picket Parliament. If Mandelson lets loose the police on you, let the whole world see what New Labour really means. Again all I ask is you fight clever, make sure the country knows what Crozier earns. Ask for a debate on TV with him where you can tell the country about the management bullying that goes on under Crozier and ask him to justify his pay and bonus. Publicly ask Mandelson what relationship he has TNT. Ask if he has any financial relationship with anyone involved with potential bidders for the Post Office.
