Not enough work for 10hrs.

Today our office was quiet. Im covering packets over the xmas period and were doing 10hr shifts 6 days. Were working our day off as we do every year plus get 2 hrs scheduled attendance as we miss out on the sorting overtime. Today we were finished 4 hrs before our time as it was quiet. Weve been told we owe these 4 hrs back when the xmas pressure kicks in. Can we be made to hours from one day that are carried on to the next day as i dont really fancy doin a 14hr shift when it gets busy. I thought it was upto the manager to find you work within your hours.

I think the hours have to be paid back in the same week
if there is not enough work this week they dont carry over to next week
any hours that have to be payed back must be agreed first

Pickle - What you are mentioning is "Banking Hours" and there is no National Agreement for it. Check with our local and Area IR reps to see if there is a local agreement - I hope not.

Gerardy - I think you have mistaken this for the "flexibility" agreement here which is only 30 minutes anyway.

You're quite right Pickle, it's the manager's job to fill your extra hours with reasonable work. Wether this entailed sorting, a late delivery or even van washing, it's their problem. You could have sat around in the canteen if they couldn't find anything for you to do, until they sent you home
There is no way they can claw back 4hrs from a previous day, that's rubbish

Thanks for the replys. Ive not got an issue working the hours, its just im not wanting to go in say sat morning to find the packets throught the roof and be told im working from 6am to 7pm. My manager was saying that if the packets are busy you will be required to work the 4hrs to suit us not you or until there clear. The usuall crap. Its gona be good if there quiet all week. Im gona end up owing a few days back at this rate. LOL

Whether fancy or not Pickle you aren't allowed to do a 14 hour shift as you must have at least 11 hour rest period in each 24 hour day. In other words the Working Time Regulations say, at regulation 10, that in each 24 hours a worker is entitled to not less than 11 consecutive hours rest (this is called daily rest).
