It seems to me as a Union that whilst Royal Mail has modernised & moved with the time 'We' as a union have sat back & just kept it all nice & tidy if you know what i mean ?? The most evident & most frustrating part of recent industrial action/s by 'Us' the members of the CWU has been watching others crossing our picketlines & working whilst we take action aggainst the company. This has usually been more in the case at Mail Centres. Especially those where Dist/Network/Proc/Deliveries had taken seperate ballots etc...
However, there have been cases at some Mail Centres, especially the newer ones where they have drivers that are based at one office & 95% of their duty is based at another ?? Now theres no problem with that, but there is when the Mail Centre they operate from has a strike. Now nobody wants to lose any money, but its increasingly frustrating when drivers cross other drivers picket lines when they claim they havent been balloted because they are members of another branch ??
This stinks of a '3 Card Trick' - Believe me, you wouldnt believe some of the stories ive heard.
Now they work at the same office, they are supplied by the same processing plant - something isnt right ?? Only their vehicles are Stationary during the day in a closed down offices yard.
As a Union we must always be as one at each office, dividing us is Royal Mails policy - as a union 'We Organize Ourselves' , & might i say, i think as a union sometimes we are organized pretty poorly. We are a public service, were not an army - were not that well orgainized, thats where the cavalier attitude comes from, we fight in times like these as how best we can.
We need to address these issues at each Mail Centre & modernise as a Union - there must be only one branch for members that operate from these new Mail Centres, its no good keeping it as it is. It totally undermines any industrial action taken at that office, especially when you hear rumours of the other drivers knocking their pipe out knocking out the segregation of mail whilst you are out on the picket line protesting & losing money.
Yes it is time to modernise - As A Union not just as a Postal Service.
