I'm also on a fixed term contract (18 months now) and have already asked this question in a previous post: http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 90#p181390 which I think has some pretty good answers. The main gist, it seems, is, it depends.... they can't legally do it but they can give another excuse. Or you could get a DOM like the guy at the end who is alright and will not hold it against you.

What you describe on your contract would be illegal, I would have thought? Have you not a copy? You should have done. I suspect your colleague is scaremongering a bit.
You must understand that I am here purely as A BEARER OF MESSAGES.

Are you in the union? If not, if you go on strike they might not renewen your contract, therefore, I would join the union as soon as possible so you are protected. I don't see how you can be sacked when there are posties that are not in the union and they have strike days off and are not dismissed. I would look at your contract does it really say that you cannot go on strike is your colleague 'pulling your leg'? I would look at your contract of employment again. Perhaps the union is not aware about this expressed term iwithn your contract.
