Royal Mail have written to the DGSP stating that they do not evisage being able to afford a pay rise across Royal Mail group this year. Whilst there is wiggle room in the letter the fact is that at present it is a pay freeze that is being offered. Even under thatcher , major etc and the Public sector pay limits in the early 90s we have never been offered nothing on pay.

I know having been at a meeting with the DGSP yesterday that he will be campaigning to ensure we get membership support for a fight not just on pay but achieving our agenda on shorter working week , improved pay , permant share of the savings as well as a long term future for staff in all functions.

The question is will everyone support the fight. Cause not every has support the previous policies and at the moment its scotland london and handfull of other units fighting on our own whilst everyone else looks on and moans that its all too much for them.

Hopefully the national briefing will sort branch`s out. We certainly need a drains up.

Spoke to a manager from another office this morning. He said that the word envisage was to be watched. He reckons that RM will offer a pay rise but linked to longer deliveries and monthly pay. I hope to god he is wrong cause I dont want any of them.

its high time we got away fro the percetage wage rise,all it's doing for the working man/women is widening the gap between wealthy and poor. give me a ten pound per week rise anytime but also use the same criteria for everyone else from dom to chairman. lets not get carried away and start calling for strike action ,we should first go down the avenue of a work to rule or in other terms do the job properly, with the addition of an overtime ban, the 2007 strike wasn,t as well supported as it could have been because a great deal of our members are not on full time contracts and could ill afford to loose money, thats my reason to thinking that if people can maintain an income they will be more inclined to support the union

Forget any overtime bans etc.. if everyone did the job properly it would turn the tables in our favour again, but as it is RM know how much they save from us (not me) cutting corners and them turning a blind eye cos it suits them.

I completely agree with your point of view but do you really think we'll get public support when people are losing there jobs and having to take pay freezes etc. A pretty clever move by the idiots that run the show. They've been one step ahead of us for years, we need help!

there has been a lot of s**t stirring already in the Tory papers like The Times - like with pensions , the tactic is to play people up against each other i.e . a lot of embittered people saying we've had it so they have to too .

A better tactic is go for RM's board and senior management , how things don't work , i.e . don't let them off the hook .

Bogstandard on pensions sadly there was not the level of support around the country as we had hoped. London attempted to make this a cricuial ballot last October during the Northmapton National breifing and the support from Branch`s around the country was luckwarm at best and some branch`s they wanted to understandbly fight on mail centres.

However the results of the mail centre ballots was at best a mixed bag with some getting a no vote and others getting a very narrow yes vote with a couple getting a big yes vote. The action was called off at the last miniute becasue the PEC believed that the Hooper report which had been published the week before had changed the positon where the Hooper report called for a reduction of 50% of the mail centres. So it had become a national issues rather then just a fight of an handful of mail centres.

If we are honest one mail centre who was taking strike action was getting pressure from delivery members who were based in the mail centre, another mail centre in North West had a legal challenge which our employment specialists confirmed that Royal Mail would get an injuction on.

Remember there are 4 members of the PEC who come from the mail centres which were being balloted and they had a say in the calling off the action.

With regards to Pension and the final salery if the government does take on the deficit then certainly it changes the ball game again. Whether the membership will be up for the row and whether the National union will be up for a row I am not convinced.
