TUC Work Your Proper Hours Day - 27 Feb 2009

The TUC Work Your Proper Hours Day will be held on 27th Feb 2009 the aim of this event is to highlight to employees the amount of unpaid work being performed and to discourage those who do to stop working extra hours for no reward.

Too many CWU members have developed a habit or culture in their workplace of working longer than their daily conditioned hours while not receiving any additional payment for their efforts.

In supporting this initiative the CWU is not looking to undermine the principal of goodwill that may still exist in some Royal Mail Units across the country. We are however, looking to end the abuse many of our members may be suffering as a result of over zealous Managers watching their budgets.

In some instances performing unpaid extra work is taken for granted and can quickly become the norm which will then often be used to cover up for a lack of adequate resource to handle the office workload or stop employees from claiming overtime because the manager has got the work covered for nothing.

Currently it is estimated that over five million people employed in the UK regularly perform unpaid overtime handing their employers a share of approximately £27 billion of free work each year.

If you're one of this number, why not take some time to reflect on how or why you are happy to work extra time for nothing. You can get out of this habit or culture and make your life better financially and by improving your work life balance. Work Your Proper Hour's Day on the 27th February 2009 is the time to make a fresh start and make the most of your own time. To help you to do this we have listed a few suggestions below:

* Start your duty/work at your proper time and don't come in early!
* Take your scheduled meal breaks on time and use the whole of your break to relax
* Do not work beyond your scheduled finish time unless you are receiving additional pay for your extra effort.

Working unpaid is not good for you; your families or work colleagues - remember the only winner will be the employer


Remember from Friday 27th February 2009 you will no longer work additional hours unless you receive the appropriate pay.

Friday is a naff day for my delivery office Much heavier on Thursdays so could be more effective.

We should have a do your job properly week in RML, that would be far more effective.

this should be pushed/advertised in every office as this is the first i have heard of it and no-one i know has either. the amount of people who come in early in my office without pay is shocking.there is about 5 out of 25 on my section who work their proper hours
