Postal workers have reacted with shock and anger to the news that their CWU union executive has decided to nominate Alan Johnson for the position of deputy leader of the Labour Party. Johnson is the former general secretary of the CWU.
Socialist Worker understands that at the executive meeting three candidates were nominated – Johnson, Jon Cruddas and Peter Hain.
Cruddas's policies, it was agreed, were clearly the closest to the CWU's, but nevertheless Johnson won the most votes of the three.
A CWU member told Socialist Worker, "I'm amazed. From a trade union perspective I could make a case for almost any of the candidates instead of Johnson.
"He was the only union leader to back Tony Blair over removing Clause Four, backed shares in the Post Office, says some union leaders are from 'Planet Zog' and piloted top-up college fees through parliament. Why on earth are we backing him?
"I'm trying to get an emergency motion to our conference denouncing the decision."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

At the end of the day should we really be shocked at the support for Johnson..lets face it some of these people are more corrupt than those that are meant to be our real enemy..management. Although there may be a few good people in these positions it always seems to come back to "you scratch my back...."
To be honest it doesnt really matter who gets into the post of deputy as they will eventually be shown up to be the lying,hypocritical,in it for as much as they can get,parasite,just like all the rest....

Look at the attendance of postal NEC members and telecoms NEC mbrs who had the most in attendance look at how each side voted look at who on the postal sided chose not to attend and therefore let AJ in by the back door look at those who abstained.
My info is that the votes for cruddas and hain from postal mbrs outweighed AJ but combined with telecoms AJ got enough votes. However AJ still got some postal votes.
I suggest if we find out who voted for AJ on the postal NEC that we dont vote for them in next years PEC elections!
Again as i said if we were still UCW and NCU then the 2 unions would have had different recomendations.
The LTB said some info etc would be forthcoming for this week so as soon as somebody gets it, get it posted and we can scrutinize it and debate it fully with all the facts to hand!

There might be method in thier madness backing Johnson e.g. Johnson asks for support as a favour but then they go back to Johnson and say sorry we did try but nobody will wear it, youv'e made your bed in politics so lie in it.
