equal seniority?

Hey all
There is a duty coming up in my office, and i am up for it against a work mate who started at the exact same time as me. I asked about it, assuming that as seniority was equal it would be suitability that was the clincher. Then i was told that its not suitability, but it goes to the oldest person. I thought that sounded strange as did others i spoke to, but that was from my cwu rep, who checked it regionally.

anybody verify this?
ps i am the youngest hence my dissapointment lol.

That is correct as I started on the same day as a colleague,and whenever a re-sign came up he would get first pick as he is older than me.

Did that not used to be the way it was decided but since the age discrimination act has it not changed?

I would think it they had changed to to who appplied for the position first, but there are so many rules etc that some become outdated until someone makes an issue out of it.

No, we just had a Repick (new Duties start Monday). They are still using age, to seperate people who started on the same day.

I agree with you, that it is age discrimination. But it is still the method that RM use.

It would seem that age is the way then. It does seem like age discrimination, and could possibly be disputed legally by an external source, but then if you were arsey about it they would just give it to the other guy citing suitability lol. I know for a fact the older guy wont manage the job,and hes not far from retirement, and as a result of this decision i have finally decided to get fit and apply for the police. I like the job and saw a future in the company, and was interested in progressing in any way or avenue that was available to me. But full time is hard to get, and you get dumped on from a great height on a regular basis. And the management..................

In our office it is done alphabetically with your surname.

There's 9 duties in my office that the DOM won't put to be filled, it's gone to disagreement but RM just ignore it

Same in ours, but I might see if when we have repick, it's changed to age, as I older, but the other person's surname is bofore me :) Not many benefits in getting older, especially in RM.

No, our duties aren't even put up because if they where I'd have one
