RE: Royal Mail’s Modernisation Plans/Mail Centre Rationalisation

As reported in LtB 906/08 we met Royal Mail on Wednesday 26th November.

During the meeting Royal Mail gave the Union a presentation on a new project being developed in the Thames Valley area which is designed to provide employees with better support and options when dealing with major change. The company claim this project represents a significant investment and have said they are keen for the Union to be involved in further developing the project.

The company also told us that it was difficult for them to discuss the wider implications of modernisation under the threat of our current industrial action ballots.

The Union responded by recognising that this is an important development but we again emphasised that there was a need to improve the current MTSF agreement and review the rationale for Royal Mail’s current Mail Centre closure programme. We have also made it clear that we cannot call off the current industrial action ballots when Royal Mail continue to press ahead with unagreed change.

Another meeting has been arranged for Thursday 4th December. Further information will be sent out in due course.

Yours sincerely,

Dave Ward Martin Collins
Deputy General Secretary (P) Asst Secretary
