Ban Bullying at Work Day - 7th November 2008

Harassment and Bullying affects so many people that the Communication Workers Union is very pleased to publicly declare its support for this excellent campaign.

Many employers recognise the value of not just having good procedures but declaring a commitment to enforce a rigid and fair enforcement of these procedures is also an equally important aspect. The CWU has been at the forefront of pioneering valuable mechanisms, which allow workers to hopefully have the confidence to know that they dont have to take the bullying.

There is always a way out and for our members it will normally mean their union rep being at the forefront of making sure a victim of bullying and harassment gets the right advice and or representation if required.

National Equality Officer Linda Roy, who herself was instrumental in the setting up of the CWUs in-house bullying and harassment helpline several years ago has very clear views on this issue.

She says: We know that there has been excellent progress made by some employers in terms of genuinely trying to tackle bullying in a constructive and committed manner, but the fact remains there are still huge problems that our members face in relation to bullying.

More needs to be done to heighten awareness of workers rights vis--vis bullying and I have no doubt that a hard line needs to be taken where there is clear unequivocal evidence to give a strong signal of support to victims of bullying in the workplace.
