Bringing mail back and it being recorded by manager

Post by theargyspy »

Seem to remember reading on RMC somewhere ( done a search, can't find it) that if a postman "Cuts off" "Brings mail back to DO" whatever you want to call it because he/she has ran out of time. The Postman then notifies his line manager what he has done....line manager is then supposed to try and get the returned mail out and delivered with another DO on OT etc but as we all know this rarely happens and you come in to work next day to find yesterdays returned mail waiting for you to take out (again) now to my questions

1) when DO has brought mail back and notified manager does this need to be recorded by the DOM in some daily office walk log?

2) if answer to question 1 is YES, then are we, as postman entitled to see this daily office walk log?

3) if answer to question 2 is YES,and I as a Postman check daily office walk log and find DOM has put down that "office 100% clear," when I know for a fact delivery bags returned undelivered because DO has "Cut Off" and hasn't gone out on OT, and still there waiting for DO to deliver next day, then would DOM be guilty of Falseifying Daily office walk log?

4) if answer to question 3 is YES, then would POSTCOMM be interested?

5) if all "cut offs" across whole country are being ignored by DOMs and each daily office walk log is being "office 100% clear,"
when they are not 100% clear then aren't POSTCOMM being lied to?

6) if all above is happening, I have no proof am purely speculating, this could be very interesting, If union rep was also to be informed by members when they return to DO with undelivered mail, and union rep was to make sure that they were all recorded daily by the dom, this would really mess their office figures

7) what would they (management) have to do to stop this "under-reporting"? they would have to make sure any mail brought back to the office was delivered same day, either by OT ( would add to office budget) or they, managers would have to deliver it instead of leaving it for DO's to deliver next day

8) if managers had to deliver all "cut off" mail same day to stop "office 75% clear," they are less likely to be very keen to cut even more duties in any future cutbacks, after all, less deliveries, more mail to deliver, more "cut offs" more mail for managers to deliver in afternoon or pay big bucks in OT

As stated earlier I have no "Proof" that any of above is happening but in the spirit of "Doing your job properly" perhaps this could be extended to management too

in my post I keep calling it "the Daily office walk log" dont know it's proper name. thats why I can't find any posts refering to it here when I do a search...so last question whats "the Daily office walk logs" proper name??

sorry such a long post, dont post often but when I do I like to get it off my chest

Good question, i dont know the answer though. But what i do know is that if you say to them in my place that unable to complete they start all this nonsense of checking your prep rate etc etc and watching your every move to see what time you may be wasting!! :d'oh!

They do that in my office but the DOM tends to check the delivery as well in order to get a overview of the entire duty.

There is a book of such and like the old accident book it is hard to find and even harder to get filled in than the old accident book of years gone by!. As only the manager knows it's whereabouts but nobody can find the manager after the go go go call!. Maybe the go go golfcourse is the place to find them after 10.30 am

I'll answer as i'm a regular at cutting off due to serious lack of good indoor working arrangements, so here goes.

1. I don't take mail back and if you do have to do this procedure then it is also done in duty time. It doesn't have to be recorded by a DOM but on return you MUST agree on any amount of mail returning to your office before you leave.

2. No, they won't log it

3. Not your problem mate, once mail is returned it is the managers problem to sort out, you go home and let them worry about that.

4. No

5. Yes but they don't give a s**t

6. It is happening, along with fiddling the special deliveries recording them as delivered when they are not. Speak to the unit rep about it.

7. All manager piss in the same pot, they won't do a thing

8. This is very true, I cut off where possible, we must all cut off to save jobs and increase contractual hours, especially part timers
CUT OFF!!!

Golf courses and managers was mentioned in HYS last year at my office. Of course I couldnt possibly divulgue the details except to say the DOM then is now our pegasus planning manager and the delivery manager has been promoted to DOM status a postman/acting manager from a neighbouring office has been promoted to delivery manager and a postman/acting manager has left after RM again oberlooked him for a substantial mangers job.

And now we have four applicants wanting the DOM's job at my office due to all the DOM jobs being advertised. The current and previous DOM have applied and two managers from elsewhere, according to my well placed source the current DOM and one of the else where managers are favourite.

In my area there are 3 reports that need to be completed during the day on the pc. They are called DODR (delivery office daily reports). This failed mail should be recorded on one of these reports, as are undelivered missorts, mail volumes, mail arrival times, time 1st delivery left office etc. Dont know if this system is nationwide or just my area.

Mail is regularly not being delivered in my office, one of the managers comes around in the morning and ticks of a sheet of paper which then means that everything is OK.

That said, whenever I'm not going to complete I tell them before I leave and they usually send someone out to take part of the delivery.

IMHO best way is to tell them before you go out and if your not sure iof you will complete in your time and you dont want to work past your time then tell them that as well. Cover yourself a much as possible before you commence delivery.
