Unit reps position normally comes up for election once a year,at our place just after Christmas. The branch will send out posters and nomination forms for members to read and fill in and candidates will then nominate themselves. If there is more then one candidate for the position then there will be an office ballot to decide who gets elected. Not to sure to be honest if the membership can vote at any time to have them replaced
Hopefully somone else on here might be able to enlighten us.

I'm not saying this is right its just what i would do.
Assumng you have a willing volunteer to take over the role, write a letter to your branch/sectionsecretary requesting an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) and put forward a motion for a vote of no confidence in the present rep and give your reasons for it, and tell them that in the interim period you want the area rep to liase on behalf of the office for the CWU
e.g. if they don't have the support of the office back this up with, i woould say signatures from at the very least 50% of the office. and make 4 copies
Speak to the rep concerned and ask them to resign giving the reasons outlined in your letter.
If they decline your request give them 1 of the copies of the letter, let them read it and ask them again to resign, if they still refuse send 1 of the copies off to your branch/section secretary and keep one for a reference.
I would also write another letter to whoever is the current reps RM negotiating opposite e.g. local rep- DOM explaining to them that the present rep is to face a vote of no confidence(assuuming you have a more than 50% backing) of the membership and will therfore be no longer acting on behalf of the CWU in this office until this matter is resolved, also any agreements signed by this rep after the date of this letter may not be recognised should there be a change of representative.
alternatively do it all behind their (present rep) backs and dont speak to them or tell them a thing but send out the letters. They will find out PDQ.
In all honesty the fist way is more sensative but if you wouldn't give them the steam off your p*ss the second one is much funnier.

If you all got together and had a meeting outside of work (ie a pub a labour club any place but work and you rep's hang out) and had a vote of no confidence in him as you suspect he is a managment stooge!. A union within a union is a powerfull force for that is is how unions were formed from the bottom up too the top of the shop floor!. DO NOT FOR GET THEIR IS STRENGTH THROUGH UNITY!.

The only way to remove a Rep/Officer is via the National Discipline Committee or stand against them at the yearly open of nominations.
Such matters may be referred by either a member or a Branch. (Rule 14 Discipline) CWU rules are on this site if you wish to read them.

A union rep is only as good as his membership behind him/her and a challanger to this also has to carry the dissatisfied with him/her!. Any of which with out the backing of the majority of the membership is a dead duck in the water!.Big Daz wrote:The only way to remove a Rep/Officer is via the National Discipline Committee or stand against them at the yearly open of nominations.
