Hi all,
just wanted a bit of advice on what (if any) my options are. I have been working in my local DO now for over two years on a 20 hour contract, along with three other lads who started at the same time as me. This week the DOM took on two people on 25 hours. Now I could understand this if my colleagues and I were useless, but the fact is, we're not. We are never off sick, or late, and management have never expressed any displeasure about our work. I know it's only 5 hours but it makes a big difference over the course of a year, and none of us have ever woked under 35 hours since we've started. Our union rep is looking into it and has wrote a letter to our DOM, but I was hoping to get some advice from people with experience in this matter. I feel very aggrieved over this whole incident and am unsure how to proceed, Do I file a grievence with our DOM or do I let the union reps do their stuff? or is there another route I and my colleagues can take. Any advice would be much appreicated. Thanks for taking the time.

I'd let the union deal with it IF you are of the opinion that they are strong enough to successfully fight your corner. However if they are doing a job which you could do then you have a very strong case. It should have been one of the points raised on the weekly resource meeting between your rep and the DOM if you have been working 35 hours on a 20 hour contract on a regular basis then there is obviously scope for your contract to be increased.
