Changing from 1 in 4 saturday to 1 in 6 advise.

Post by postiewhite »

Im on a 4 day cover on 30hrs. I have 9yrs seniority and have chosen to stay part time in a recent repick in January to keep my 4 day a week. There are many people that joined RM last year that managed to get full or part time duties but it was my choice to keep the 4 day working week..
I have been told the management are planning on removing duties that have a saturday off every month and putting everyone on 1 in 6 which will mean my working pattern will probably end up on 5 day cover. There is only 4 people in the office that work 4 days and we will be the only ones that it was directly affect the most.
I very much doubt I can do anything about it, the union rep are not getting involved in these management changes so I was wondering if there is a loop hole in this that I could exploit for them to keep my working structure the same. Im never on my covers anyway!!!!!
I think it will stink that there will be 50 people less senior to me that have duties and I will effectively become a 5 day reserve.
Anything I can do or yet again is the union going to fail me?!!

I don’t know why the Union Rep has not backed your corner and think you need to take it an upper Union level. You could say what RM have done is virtually ripped up your contract and offered you a new one.

The first steps you should take is let it be known to the manager that you are deeply against the change as this would affect your work/ home lifestyle balance and this is why you have chosen the 4 day a week in the first place.(Maybe you have a dependent to care for).Either put it in writing or set up a meeting with a union rep present.(If you don’t feel confident with your present office Rep then ask the area Rep to step in)

Hopefully the meeting is all you need to resolve.

Thank you. The revision was at the beginning of the year, and at that point I had the part time pick of maybe 20 duties but I chose the 4 day duty over any of them at the time. If they change this the 1 in 4s to 1 in 6s then they will put me on a 5 day cover (well infact it will be a reserve because im never on my covers anyway)

Yeah, good luck with that. I was in a similar situation, with 2 disabled dependents to care for. The only consideration I was given was 4 weeks notice to change my and my family’s entire lives around. What a caring employer

Any revision now (apparently) will involve moving to 1 in 6. If hadn't already jumped ship, this would have sent me jumping, damn that for a game of soldiers.

Our office scrapped all the 1 in 4 walks but the rota lads kept their same 4 days & just go spare, a descent union rep should be able to sort it or dangle the I’ll quit carrot, that usually works.

Why are the union letting us go backwards, we should be on permanent strike until the company start offering better shift patterns,i'd be happy to work Sundays if i had a 3 on 4 off part time duty, please please union start consulting with your members.

Many employees live from one payslip to the next, especially with the high volume of part-time workers now. An all out protracted strike is no longer an option. The miners' strike proved that.

We have proven things like the three days rolling action much more effective and only results is the loss of a day's pay each week to the employee
