Cover being moved due to working days off

Post by postiewhite »

I am a cover person, but its becoming a stress when 3 times a week I have no consistency due to the duty holder working their day off.
I get they need to have operational needs but surely in fairness (which is a word that rarely goes hand in hand with the company) it shouldn't happen at least 2-3 times a week having me kicked off and put somewhere else, effectively being a reserve?
Iam senior to half the staff there and I purposely declined a duty in the repick 3 months ago so I could drop a day and do a 4 day cover. I only regularly do 1 of my duties each week which is my cover.
Is there anything I can do about this? Its a tricky one because if the duty holder wants to work their day off they will only go on their own round effectively kicking me off it.
Ive worked in other offices where the cover person stays on cover and if the duty holder wants to work their day off then they will be given a choice of any other duty available.
Do I have absolutely no rights in this? Its my duty for the day and its becoming annoying and causes stress. There are people been in the company less than 6 months and are on duties which are not even signed to them.

nope sorry if the duty holder has picked a job it belongs to them, you effectively picked the job of being spare.

The exact same thing happens to me and other cover duty holders in my office. Pretty much everyone ive asked has said the walk holders should be put on a different walk if they want to work one of their days off but management will always pull out the old "needs of the business" card and move the cover duty holder instead. To be fair there are a few walk holders in my office who are happy to do any duty when working their days off, but the majority will only come in if they're put on their own walk. I get along well with the walk holders i cover and wouldn't really mind being moved around as much if management asked me first and gave me the choice of the available walks for that day. Ive only just got my cover duty after being a reserve for 3 years so know the majority of walks in the office so its not that much of a hassle for me. Its the fact that cover duty holders are treated so differently to walk holders that really annoys me. If i said i would only work my day off if they would move a duty holder off their walk they wouldn't consider it for a second

Not true at all. No duty "belongs" to anyone other than RM really, but even if it did i would argue it would only count for their normal days in that week and the other day it would "belong" to the cover duty holder.

I know. Worrying when someone is trying to ask a genuine question and it was an instant negative short response.
I shall however listen to other advise on this. I think the manager should at least always put me on a duty I know if I get moved. In all honesty I probably only know 6 duties well, my previous manager would accommodate me but since the recent shake up of managers he has been replaced and I fear I will be all over the place, effectively causing stress.
I would like to think that I stand some type of case if im moved all over the place when I signed for a cover.

it's not their duty on the day off though, it is total garbage that they must be able to stay on it,
i get that it makes sense to remain on it due to efficiency but end of the day, if they want the overtime they should take what's on offer elsewhere otherwise go home
you need to have a word with area rep and dom

Ill make it simple for you all. The duty holder is coming in because they need staff. In most cases the duty holder doesnt know any other walks. If the duty holder doesnt come in on thier day off then you wont have enough staff to cover all the walks, this would mean extra lapsing/arguments with management for everyone.

Much fairer for everyone in the office if the duty holder comes in, stays on the walk and the cover (which normally know multipul walks) go where they are needed.

Rubbish, the duty doesn't belong to them on their day off. The op has their own duty which covers the days off .

I get what you are saying but I worked in an office for 6 years where the duty holder had to move if they wanted to work their day off. Normally when you work your day off you work it for yourself (because you need the money) NOT to do the company a favour. If you didn't need the money then you simply don't have to work that 6th day do you!! So on the back of what I've just said if you need the money then surely you are prepared to go onto another walk for that day. If I needed the money and I had a duty then I would ask which duties were available that day (and there is always a choice) then I would be happy to go on that for the day and NOT hold the office to random by telling them that I will only go on my own duty!!!
We have just had a revision and we were supposed to eliminate all this messing about. Your answer seemed to be "tough!, you need to move"!!
If they need the cash then they will go on a different duty on their day off. Simple
So tell me the difference between a cover and a reserve?
Also are you telling me a cover person has less say than a duty holder?

Different in my office, The full timers only know the duty they are on and generally they get asked to come in as there are other (pt) duties in the office that need cover ,so the rest day duty covers whats spare and the duty holder covers the only job they know.
