Sunday Overtime Restriction Part Timer

Post by rogersh »

A part time RM employee contracted to work 16 hours on weekends has been told the 4 hours overtime prior to Sunday start time is not going to be allowed in future.
Meanwhile the place is flooded with agency workers across all 3 shifts, normally 7.45 hours.

Anyone with an insight if this decision to restrict this regular overtime is legitimate or should it be challenged through the Union.

What time do they finish on Saturday and what time would they be starting on Sunday with 4 hours overtime?
Is it because there needs to be an 11 hour break between shifts?
Just guessing.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Clash i understand your reasoning but the shifts are;
EDIT; Saturday 06.00 to 14.00 (staying on 2/4 hours O.T)
Sunday 15.00 to 23.00 (starting at 11am 4 hrs O.T.)

I heard the reason for the change was that is was not good "Business Planning". The irony is that the person was asked to come in today (Sunday) 1 hour early on O.T., 2pm to 3pm, to cover a "key" job!.

Don't wish to sound blunt, but why are you complaining about four hours of overtime?
By definition, overtime is over contracted hours, which is not guaranteed

Saying "I Heard" this and that is irrelevant and nothing more than Chinese whispers

Trying to blame agency staff is also irrelevant and just as bad as you have no knowledge on how an office is resourced with staff to traffic volumes. That can be seen as unwarranted conduct on your part. They just like you are trying to provide for their families.

Just because you are a weekend contracted worker does not give you the right to any overtime over any other contracted employee when offered

If you have cause of complaint you need to consult the office rep or manager

No ot is guaranteed we will agree on on that but why are agency staff being booked on a sat yet rm staff cannot be booked in on a sun morn yet agency staff can.

Redlen, Just to clarify I am talking about a colleage who confided in me that the situation had changed. It is not really a complaint either. You are correct, overtime is not guaranteed, but the point is that hours are being covered by agency (several) on Sunday over nights, earlies & lates along with RM workers.
Agency numbers fluctuate, but you may require 20 on each shift. Aiden has picked up the apparent injustice of agency ,& RM 8 hours OT, being used for the whole shift (although are sometimes released after 4 hours if the work dries up) while the RM employee is sidelined.

The phrase not good "business planning" was not acually heard by me but was related to me by another colleage who texted that apparently "part days are no good for business planning" . I'm not blaming agency workers, I started out as an agency worker for 18 months with RM before being taken on. I wish they would take even more agency workers on as the frequency in which they are used gives scope for this in line with the "pathway to change" to reduce the reliance on agency/casual resource.

You are not being blunt, but unfortunately have taken my post out of context with false accusation & missed the point.

EDIT; The point being that 90% of the year 5/6 RM staff work 2-4 hours overtime on the early shift supplemented by agency - Circa 10, but the number can vary (example - On Saturday 30 agency were booked but only 12 turned up!) The change to this arrangement appears to be only on a Sunday!

Just a further point to add;
RMG & CWU - KEY PRINCIPLES FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT (THE PATHWAY TO CHANGE)
2.4 Job Security - Commitments and Assurances to Employees
All future revision activity will reduce reliance on agency/casual staff and restore the Agenda for Growth/ **Four Pillars commitments on staffing and criteria for the use of external resource.

**FOUR PILLARS OF SECURITY AND PAY NATIONAL AGREEMENT
8. Resourcing In Line with Current Agreements
Agency workers are intended to cover short term or unforeseen resourcing needs, expected to last for periods of no more than 12 weeks,which cannot be covered by offering additional hours to existing employees whilst maintaining quality of service. In the rare circumstances that employment exceeds 12 weeks the provisions of the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 (as amended) will apply.

Perhaps a delivery OPG, with MSK issues, could be offered the hours to provide a break from walking.
Might prevent an ill health retirement
