Why are they DETERMINED to put us out at the hottest point of day?

Post by 2yearpostie »

After our revision our start/finish times have changed so we dont go out till after 10am and dont finish till 3/4PM.

I thought we were meant to be a health and safety led company but putting us out in the midday sun at summer seems completely :d'oh! :d'oh! to me so why has our rep and leaders (higher than the DOM) done this to us?

Our times vary a bit from day to day but most days it's a 1415 finish time.

Can you think of any other UK company which allows the work-force to work the hours around "the midday sun"?

Our office has been like this for years and working in the summer can be horrendous after 11am. Our Dom try’s to mitigate this though by announcing on the tannoy to stay in the shade and wear sunscreen which does take the sting out of walking for 4 hours in 30 degree heat 😂😂

we have been doing these times since p&l started 10+ years ago and most posties at our offices dont get out till between 9-10am and arent finishing until 4 - 5pm , as the duties are between 5-6+ hours , so a revision in ours should change this fingers crossed , but if your not happy you can always look for another job where you start earlier and finish early .

I really hope this issue gets treated more seriously by the Union and health and safety people. Our office are on 9 day fortnights and so work longer days with 3pm finish time.

Theres such a huge difference between doing a 3:30-4 hour delivery and finishing between 12 and 1, compared to a 4-5 hour delivery and working through that 12-3pm heat. Especially when youre on a steppy and hilly delivery.

I now dread each summer and I actually dont know how i get through them to be honest. The fact the vans have got no air con or electric windows makes things 10 times worse. There is no escape from it.

I bet if they were flexible and introduced a Spanish style siesta were you can break off working for a few hours in the afternoon and finish your shift later in the evening there would be zero take-up on that offer.

Why cant they delay the letters by one day so you put the mail in the fitting when you get back at say 1pm. Then the next day just packets and parcels are sorted for that day, put in the fitting (with yesterdays mail) and all tied up and ready to go by 8am?

Because they would be fined for failing to meet Q of S targets.

There are obviously ways around that as has been shown by the D+4 product.

Royal Mail only have to offer a next day delivery service, If no one or even hardly anyone takes it up because there are much cheaper alternatives they can't really be fined.

Then there's the USO review next year....

Anyway I think for most of us who have already been working through the hottest part of the day for a long time we're more worried about delivering in the winter after dark.

Yes I know we used to deliver in the dark in the morning but junkies and drunks don't do mornings in my experience, the do hang around in the early evening though.

It's been 30 degrees for 1 day, hardly a heatwave.
