Managing The Surplus - Do's, Donts, Pitfalls and tips for surplus staff being made for redeployment

Post by User817191 »

I'm being made to seek redeployment or have been offered VR. Currently I work in admin (16 years seniority) and apparently HR said there are little to no other admin jobs around. Its been suggested I transfer to a collection driver, postie or in sorting office.

Are we supposed to just accept something different from what we are used to?

I have been experiencing on off chest pains since spring last year. Tests are ongoing. So I'm wary of doing anything physically demanding.

Can surplus staff take a career break while we decide what we want?

It would be interesting to hear stories of colleagues who have been there the managing the surplus exercise and hear accounts of any pressure tactics they use on you?

Thanks in advance

If you want to stay with Royal Mail but don’t want it to be too physical then personally I’d go for the Mail centre job. But as already mentioned VR would be preferable and new admin jobs don’t seem to be in short supply.

You need to be aware that the nature of the job in MCs is changing. There are very few manual letters and flats duties these days. tbqf you could probably get away with just 1 or 2 people on flats and 1 or 2 on manual letters for most of a shift. Chances are that these days the "DDA" type duties will already be spoken for with the MC's own "DDA staff"

What happens if an office (more likely to be a MC affected) if a machine is removed, there'd be less mech staff needed, how is it decided who gets bumped off of the mech?
